Pretty Salma by Niki Daly is an interesting twist on a European classic. As the story takes on a new life from a different culture it holds the same values. This book is an amazing example of different cultures and would make a great lesson to compare to the original little red riding hood story. The author and illustrator take you on a journey in this amazing tale.

Pretty Salma is an African take on the story of little red riding hood. The story features Mr. Dog as the mischievous wolf. Salma is tricked into giving Mr. Dog her things and soon comes to regret it. This tale holds all of the classic storylines from the little red riding hood but with a twist from a different culture.

Pretty Salma is a TL book that is a South African adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood. This book won the Parent‘s Choice Gold Award and would be great for a RT. Resources for this book can be found here . UDL 7.2 which optimizes relevance, value and authenticity works well because students can discuss the importance of adaptations of TL in other cultures.

hadassajl EL 4 which is link topic to students‘ prior knowledge applies because you can ask students what they know about Little Red Riding Hood and to anticipate what they think is going to happen. #UCFLAE3414SP20 (edited) 5y
SequoiaC123 I love that this story shows how much cultures are different and alike: stories are passed from culture to culture, but are told in different ways! Great book choice! 5y
RaivionneC What a great choice for a different spin on traditional literature! Agreed, this books seems like a great way to teach children culture alikeness and differences. 5y
DrSpalding I added this to my stack. What a wonderful variant of the traditional literature tale. When I see these not only do I think culture but I also think geography! Show them a map of Africa! 5y
