Lift as You Climb
Lift as You Climb: The Story of Ella Baker | Patricia Hruby Powell
41 posts | 17 read
Learn about the civil rights activist Ella Baker in this inspiring picture book from Sibert Honor winner Patricia Hruby Powell and Caldecott Honor winner R. Gregory Christie. What do you hope to accomplish? asked Ella Bakers granddaddy when she was still a child. Her mother provided the answer: Lift as you climb. Long before the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s, Ella Baker worked to lift others up by fighting racial injustice and empowering poor African Americans to stand up for their rights. Her dedication and grassroots work in many communities made her a valuable ally for leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and she has been ranked as one of the most influential women in the civil rights movement. In the 1960s she worked to register voters and organize sit-ins, and she became a teacher and mentor to many young activists. Caldecott Honor winner R. Gregory Christies powerful pictures pair with Patricia Hruby Powells poignant words to paint a vivid portrait of the fight for the freedom of the human spirit.

“What do you hope to accomplish?”

This would be a great book for the older kids, such as third through fifth grade. This would be a great book to use to introduce the civil right movement. It can highlight separate ideas that might not always be talked about in the history books. I think that the images used were really empowering and would be beneficial for children to see.

The book would be a good read when discussing the Civil Rights movement. When teaching about MLK teachers could also read this book to shine light on the people who helped make a change but may not be learned about in history books.

I would use this biography with older elementary students to expose them to another prominent, yet not as well known, activist during the civil rights movement. Ella Baker is an inspiring figure for all people, but especially for young women. During the civil rights movement, most well-known activists were men. Her efforts to be seen and heard during her fight for freedom can provide powerful messages and important lessons to young students.
