Steles of the Sky
Steles of the Sky | Elizabeth Bear
4 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Elizabeth Bear concludes her award-winning epic fantasy trilogy, The Eternal Sky, with Steles of the Sky. Re Temur, exiled heir to his grandfather's Khaganate, has finally raised his banner and declared himself at war with his usurping uncle. With his companions—the Wizard Samarkar, the Cho-tse Hrahima, and the silent monk Brother Hsiung—he must make his way to Dragon Lake to gather in his army of followers. Temur has many enemies, and they are not idle. The sorcerer who leads the Nameless Assassins, whose malice has shattered the peace of all the empires of the Celedon Highway, has struck at Temur's uncle already. To the south, in the Rasan empire, a magical plague rages. To the east, the great city of Asmaracanda has burned, and the Uthman Caliph is deposed. And in the hidden ancient empire of Erem, Temur's son has been born, and a new moon has risen in the Eternal Sky.

Finished The Eternal Sky Trilogy last night. Book 3 was more interesting then the 1st two books due to Bear finally letting up on the descriptions of the world & actually focusing on a plot, but what was frustrating was reading 3 volumes that lead up to a war that lasted 20 pages w/ little description. Apparently she can describe what a pillar looks like for 5 paragraphs but not a war :/ overall I would not recommend this series to anyone.

I have hated this entire trilogy so far, but this right here was the sweetest thing I have read in all 3 books. And I couldn‘t help but smile and feel a warmth gather in my heart. It was pure and unexpected. To be honest book 3 has been way more entertaining then the other two.

GondorGirl That's adorable! Just litt of curiosity though- if you've hated the rest of the series, why are you still reading it?! 6y
Sweetkokoro @GondorGirl I waited weeks to get ahold of this trilogy from my library so I‘m stubborn and don‘t want all that time to go to waste, and I have this terrible need to finish something I have already started. Plus I heard many good things about the follow up trilogy which initially sparked my interest, that of course was before I knew it was a follow up To this trilogy so I‘m pushing myself to read this one so I‘m not lost in the follow up. 6y
GondorGirl @Sweetkokoro I get that. Good luck, and I hope the other books are worth the effort of reading these! 6y
Sweetkokoro @GondorGirl thank you, I too am hoping it will be worth the work I have put in haha. 6y

Goal for the day is to finish Steles of the Sky. That way I can jump into The Skull in the Stone and then return them both to the library before the 15th. And then I can start one of my new books. Thankfully this one is starting to be a bit more interesting, finally getting more on Brother Hsiung and Edene, it only took 3 freaking volumes to get kind of interesting but not by a lot.. let‘s just hope I can finish it today.

I should reward myself handsomely for forcing myself to continue this trilogy. Let‘s see how much worse it can get I suppose...
