We Are All the Same in the Dark
We Are All the Same in the Dark: A Novel | Julia Heaberlin
29 posts | 45 read | 42 to read
The discovery of a girl abandoned by the side of the road threatens to unearth the long-buried secrets of a Texas towns legendary cold case in this superb, atmospheric novel from the internationally bestselling author of Black-Eyed Susans. If you only read one thriller this year, let it be this one. Psychologically absorbing, original and atmospheric. I could not turn the pages fast enough.Elin Hilderbrand, #1 New York Times bestselling author of 28 Summers Its been a decade since Trumanell Branson disappeared, leaving only a bloody handprint behind. Her pretty face still hangs like a watchful queen on the posters on the walls of the towns Baptist church, the police station, and in the high school. They all promise the same thing: We will find you. Meanwhile, her brother, Wyatt, lives as a pariah in the desolation of the old family house, cleared of wrongdoing by the police but tried and sentenced in the court of public opinion and in a new documentary about the crime. When Wyatt finds a lost girl dumped in a field of dandelions, making silent wishes, he believes she is a sign. The towns youngest cop, Odette Tucker, believes she is a catalyst that will ignite a seething town still waiting for its own missing girl to come home. But Odette cant look away. She shares a wound that wont close with the mute, one-eyed mystery girl. And she is haunted by her own history with the missing Tru. Desperate to solve both cases, Odette fights to save the lost girl in the present and to dig up the shocking truth about a fateful night in the pastthe night her friend disappeared, the night that inspired her to become a cop, the night that wrote them all a role in the towns dark, violent mythology. In this twisty psychological thriller, Julia Heaberlin paints unforgettable portraits of a woman and a girl who redefine perceptions of physical beauty and strength. Advance praise for We Are All the Same in the Dark [Julia Heaberlin] once again brilliantly captures the atmosphere and rough beauty of a strange and divided state.CrimeReads Exceptional . . . After a devastating twist halfway through, the intense plot builds to an emotional finale. Heaberlin sensitively addresses issues of survival and vulnerability in this heart-wrenching gothic tale.Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Right before my big reading slump started in 2020, I got approved for an ARC for this book. Fast forward two years and I see this gorgeous cover at a bookstore and promptly buy it. Little did I realize I already had it at home on my Kindle. But you know what? I don‘t regret the purchased second copy at all. A wonderfully atmospheric book with plenty of twists that keeps you guessing.

JackOBotts Starting this today for my #auldlangspine kick off, thanks to you! 11mo

Forgot to review this one.
I found this one highly enjoyable! I did not see the first big "twist" coming nor could I have predicted the ending. But as the handy in-book therapist tells us is just that- we can't begin to imagine what's coming.
There was so much love between so many of these characters and yet also distrust- a complex story that also touches on our conceptions of female beauty etc.
Don't ignore the author's acknowledgements!

Gissy Adorable!🥰❤️❤️❤️ 2y

Another psychological thriller that was tolerable after my break from this genre. Texas-set and atmospheric, from the point of view of two women, each traumatized in their own way, this was a well done audio performance. Small town Christian community using religion as a weapon, but evil lurks in the hearts of men. Not sure how long this will stay with me but it was an enjoyable enough reading experience. #bookspin for March

Did I see the end coming and who the killer was? 🤷🏼‍♀️ if I go back and thought about it maybe.

WE ARE ALL THE SAME IN THE DARK by Julia Heaberlin

After Odette‘s father passes, she moves back home to solve the case he never could. A long-missing woman who was the sister of Odette‘s old boyfriend—the man who has always been guilty in the eyes of the town.

Heartbreaking, poignant, searing to the core. I loved this tale and was also wrecked by it. It‘s a powerful experience, one worth having. I just wish I had more time with these characters.

This was a great mystery with strong female characters. The switch in narrators and perspectives was well done. Considering all the mysteries I read, the fact that I couldn‘t anticipate the ending is a huge kudus and made me enjoy this even more.

This was absolutely the best book I‘ve listened to in a year. I found myself sitting in my car at lunch, or waiting to go in the house after work, just to find out what happens, next. You feel the closeness of the tight-knit community, it‘s collective heartbreak at losing the town sweetheart, and their desire for resolution, no matter the cost (or the truth). Strong female protagonists make me love this even more.

Oh this was a twisty one but I liked it! The story weaves into quite a few characters but overall this was really good. I found myself engrossed in this story, from the one leg police officer Odette to the one eye girl Angel that has more to say than expected. Not a surprising end but satisfying. #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

I liked this book. It really hooked me in. There were a few places where I had to pause and reorient myself as to where in the time of the story I was but I think it was worth it.

I can tell you that Julia Heaberlin's, We Are All the Same in the Dark, is a boat ride that starts out in a dense fog but journeys along the water to much clearer skies ahead.

It was a bit wordy and I felt like a lot of it could have been left out. That being said, it was a good story. I wanted to keep reading it and find out who the bad guy was. I did figure it out and that was a bit of a letdown but it happens when you read a lot of thrillers I guess.Though still it was very good. I had a couple of unanswered questions but that's ok too. 4/5 stars

Halfway through this book I was stunned. 😧 What? Read the next page. Went back and reread the page before. What?! Reread them both again.
That‘s why I love this author: she gets the reader involved with her characters and then she writes a good mystery.
This is one of the best I‘ve read this year.

We Are All the Same in the Dark kept me guessing, so I'll enthusiastically recommend it. Besides being mysterious and dark, there are some great moments of comic relief. I'll read this author again.

Well that was a dark thriller but it didnt hold my interest as much as I'd hoped. Having read other books by the author I had high hopes for this and it was good but I found myself losing interest in the middle. The time jump threw me a bit too. That being said the ending was well done and I enjoyed the mystery but it did leave me with too many questions at the end though. The plot is a slow one with a few twists along the way. #Netgalley 3*

I literally couldn‘t put Heaberlin‘s latest mystery down! A layered story involving multiple disappearances, the book hooks you right in from the beginning with a mysterious young woman found on the side of a highway. Spanning years, the plot provides some genuine shocks! From the great heroines you the excellent Texas setting, this is definitely a thrilling read! I can‘t wait to see what she writes next!! Thanks, #NetGalley!

A twisty, atmospheric mystery/thriller set in a small Texas town filled with buried secrets. Odette is a police officer who lost her leg in a car accident as a teen on the same night her boyfriend's sister and abusive father went missing, and ten years later she's still determined to solve the mystery when she meets a mysterious girl running from something. Really well written with strong female characters. I received an ARC from the publisher.

I'm a huge fan of Julia Heaberlin so I was thrilled to receive an #ARC and can't wait to start this afternoon.
I'm so behind on reviews here; I've been breezing through about 3 books a week recently and am very thankful after a reading slump from March-May!

Bette I remember really liking Black-Eyed Susans. Thanks for the heads up on this! 4y
kyraleseberg @Bette I enjoyed that one too! Paper Ghosts was also fantastic 4y
