My Trip Down the Pink Carpet
My Trip Down the Pink Carpet | Leslie Jordan
6 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
A hilarious romp from small-town USA to the pink carpet of Hollywood with the beloved Emmy-winning actor, playwright, and gay icon Leslie Jordan is a small man with a giant propensity for scene stealing. Best known for his bravura recurring role as Karen's nemesis, Beverley Leslie, on Will & Grace (for which he won a Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy in 2006), he has also made memorable appearances on Ally McBeal, Boston Public, Monk, and Murphy Brown. Raised in a conservative family in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Leslie -- who describes himself as "the gayest man I know" -- boarded a Greyhound bus bound for LA with $1,200 sewn into his underpants and never looked back. His pocket-sized physique and inescapable talent for high camp paved the way to a lucrative and varied career in commercials and on television. Along the way he immersed himself in writing for the stage, and his one-man testimonials have become cult off-Broadway hits. But with success came dangerous temptations: a self-proclaimed former substance abuser and sexaholic, Leslie has spent time in jail and struggled to overcome his addictions and self-loathing. My Trip Down the Pink Carpet is a rollicking, fast-paced collection of stories, served up with wit, panache, and plenty of biting asides. Filled with comically overwrought childhood agonies, offbeat observations, and revealing celebrity encounters -- from Boy George to George Clooney -- it delivers a fresh, laugh-out-loud take on Hollywood, fame, addiction, gay culture, and learning to love oneself.

1-29-23: My 11th finished book of 2023! Leslie wrote so freely about his life it was easy to read this in less than 24 hours. A lot of his personal stories about his life were surprising. Growing up as a gay man in Chattanooga, Tennessee sounded difficult but he loved his parents and it seems like they accepted him which is so nice to hear. He does dish on some fun stuff in the entertainment world, as well, and he is very funny while doing it.

Like many people, I‘ve become a little obsessed with Leslie Jordan during the past months. 😍
1. Yes, I vote each election now. I have already dropped off my ballot. Women protested & argued for voting rights for so many years. This last year, our governor‘s race came down to 5,000 votes—our Covid story would be different if the other guy had won.
2. I got to travel! A few days off was much-needed.

I should be working, but I‘m unmotivated atm. So, I‘m catching up on posts instead. I forgot to put this in my review, but I was so excited about this part because I know Erin Chandler and her family! She has written 2 books & I‘ve had them both signed. I also know her cousins from my camp. Her family is well-known in Ky due to politics. It‘s cool to actually see someone I know mentioned in a book.

During the last few months, like many people, I have become a little obsessed with Leslie Jordan on Insta. A few weeks ago, I realized he had written a book about 12 years ago & ordered it. Last night I needed some light reading. I really enjoyed this—it‘s funny but also serious when he talks about his past drug use & struggling with his homosexuality. There‘s a chapter about Matt Lauer, which is awkward now. Overall, a fun read.
