A case of a book that was not fleshed out enough or edited hard enough & sent to publication too soon. It has a good premise & some good content for creating a solid magic system, but a lot of things fell short. Not enough nuance or subtlety to the writing & a lot of telling vs. showing. Characters were flat & pacing was inconsistent. There was too much convenience in the plot & I had a hard time caring about a story with no risk. Disappointing.

I've mentioned in another post, it's a tradition to get new books for my birthday (this Thursday). Since going to the bookstore wasn't an option, I ordered some, & still managed to get carried away (I ordered 2 more that haven't arrived yet lol). I'm excited to add these to my shelves. I'm Cuban and never read books by Cuban writers until now (2 of them are Cuban). The tagged book is also for #ReadYourSign I'm late, but getting started soon.
