#JubilantJuly Day 26 - Controversial
Published in 1898, this is a groundbreaking feminist text. Suffragette and women's rights activist Elizabeth Cady Stanton presents an interpretation of the Christian bible that challenges the underlying belief that women should be subservient to men. It was so controversial that many of her fellow activists denounced it publicly.
Spent the day in Seneca falls yesterday. Wishing I had done it sooner.
Unbelievably progressive for its time, and still somewhat progressive now, THE WOMEN'S BIBLE is a masterpiece. The author offers an educated, rational, feminist critique of Abrahamic patriarchal traditions, and especially the books of the Christian bible. Her takedowns are full of 19th century snark and shade, while being grounded in research, information, and logic. The author was trying to move the women's mvmt beyond suffrage.
