This is the story of Lizzie Vogel, a 15 year old girl who finds herself working in an old people's home in Leicestershire in the 1970s. The place is in chaos and it's not really a suitable job for a schoolgirl: she'd only gone for the job because she wanted a new phase and it seemed too exhausting to commit to being a full-time girlfriend or a punk. Lizzie has some knowledge of old people (they're not suited to granary bread, and you mustn't compare them to toddlers) but she doesn't know there's a right way to get someone out of the bath, or what to do when someone dies. When a rival old people's home with better parking and daily chairobics threatens to take all their patients, Paradise Lodge's cast of staff and helpers, from the assertively shy Nurse who only communicates through little grunts to the son of the Chinese takeaway manager who's renowned for his erotic handholding techniques, have to come together to save the home before it's too late. From the bestselling author of Love, Nina comes a story of being very young, and very old, and the laughter, and the tears, in between.

“I'd only ever had one boyfriend and it hadn't gone well. I'd realized pretty quickly that this boy and I were incompatible (because of everything he said and did), so I told him it was over. It took months for him to get the message. It was so excruciating, I thought I was going to have to pay someone to kill him.“

willaful Another favorite quote: “It was time to speak to my mother--who knew all about dealing with problems, and was as kind and compassionate as you get in an English person.“ 1y

This book is so funny!! It‘s about a teen working at an old folks home and going to school and it is just sooo funny about love and death and family and stuff. Very dry British humor. Definitely a pick, highly recommend!

A fun easy book written in a memoir style about one girl's experience of working in an retirement home whilst dealing with a chaotic family in the late 70s

It seemed unkind but understandable - they had all loved her very much before she left and the feeling of abandonment made that love turn sour. It always does.
A feeling I can relate to well at the moment...

Surprisingly, I liked this book a lot more that I expected I would. The protagonist wasn't annoying at the start, but still finished as a better person.

Tonight's book is Nina Stibbe's Paradise Lodge which is hopefully going to be my book set within 100 miles of me for @bookriot #readharder 2017. Technically London is within 100 miles of me, but as I read a lot of books set in London, that seems like cheating. This is set about 20 miles from me which feels more in the spirit of things.

charl08 Hope you like it more than I did. Love Nina worked better for my funnybone. 8y
Verity @charl08 I have mixed experience of Stibbe - I liked Love Nina, but wasn't blown away by it, wasn't very keen on the first novel but keep coming back because so many people that I like like her so much. 8y

#photoadaynov16 #childprotagonists This book is charming and funny which is perhaps surprising since it's about a teenager working in a nursing home.

I was lucky enough to meet Nina Stibbe after her talk on her new book at the Cheltenham Literature Festival last week. She was absolutely brilliant, can't wait wait to read her new book, and highly recommend her first two.

Vanity Fair called it "a comic romp about aging and belonging." Add it to your list!
