A twist on the vampire genre. Not sure if it's YA, but it reads that way. Regardless I really enjoyed this read. Not scary, and a bit predictable, but satisfying and a bit heartbreaking.

I checked this book out from the library because it was in the “horror” audiobook section. I never found the story scary even if the creatures were creepy. It didn‘t feel any different from a regular, fantasy monster story. It was mostly predictable but still enjoyable enough to keep me interested. The ending was definitely sad and unexpected.
4⭐ | Narration 😁 = Very Good | Narrated by 📣 Elle Newlands
Take some Scottish lore, a monster with lots of teeth and add a Father who may have murdered your Mother, mix it with characters you can‘t help but like and it all adds up to a pretty nifty YA-ish horror story. The author totally had me enthralled, right up until the very end. I really wasn‘t feeling that ending...not even a little. But it was still worthwhile regardless.
The crevice in my heart has grown a bit wider since reading this, but I‘m okay with being broken by a story this beautiful. As the tale concluded, I knew that I would never be the same.

“My entire body turns to ice as it looks toward me, its head weaving oddly from side to side, but its eyes stay unfocused, no jolt of connection with mine. Then it raises its chin. It‘s smelling the air, I realize. It can‘t see me. It‘s trying to locate me by scent.”
Okay, so I know this is supposed to be creepy, but she basically described my blind ferret Jude in this passage and now he‘s all I can picture in my head! 😂
Oh this book. It‘s atmospheric, the writing is gorgeous, the setting fantastic, the friendship believable, the family dynamic suitably complex, the premise intriguing and yet...and yet at the end, I found this YA story (categorized as horror,fantasy/dark magic, legends & fables) somehow lacking. The story didn‘t come together the way I would have liked. That being said, for all the reasons I listed, I expect it will find readers. On sale 1/5/21.
