Edward Hopper
Edward Hopper: An Intimate Biography | Gail Levin
1 post | 1 read | 2 to read
00 Edward Hopper's canvasses are filled with stripped-down spaces and unrelenting light, evocative landscapes, and the lonely aspects of men and women seemingly isolated in their surroundings. What kind of man had this haunting vision, and what kind of life engendered this art? No one is better qualified to answer these questions than art historian Gail Levin, author and curator of the major studies and exhibitions of Hopper's work. In this intimate biography she reveals the true nature and personality of the man himself--and of the woman who shared his life, the artist Josephine Nivison. Happy Birthday to Edward Hopper, my favorite painter! His work's stark mid-century isolation, loneliness, and use of lighting has been a tremendous influence on my own writing - just as much as any writer!

quirkyreader Some of his works are on display at the Indianapolis Art Museum. My favourite work is The Night Cafe. 8y
Notafraidofwords Loved studying some of his work in college. I wish they had a class just for his paintings. 8y
MrBook If you haven't, visit the Edward Hopper House in Nyacm, NY. It was his childhood and adulthood home. Great place. 8y

LauraBeth I was fortunate enough to live in NYC for 15 years and I came away with such a deep appreciation for art. Hopper is one of my faves ❤️ I'm glad you posted these paintings! 8y
BookishFeminist This is probably of interest to you- there's an anthology of short stories inspired by Edward Hopper paintings. It's called In Sunlight or in Shadow, edited by Lawrence Block who I know you like. It's out in December! 8y
