Meet John Cromer, one of the most unusual heroes in modern fiction. If the minority is always right then John is practically infallible. Growing up disabled and gay in the 1950's, circumstances force John from an early age to develop an intense and vivid internal world. As his character develops, this ability to transcend external circumstance through his own strength of character proves an invaluable asset. Extremely funny and incredibly poignant, this is a major new novel from a writer at the height of his powers.

Pickpick

Yes, this is a novel about a severely disabled boy growing up, and growing up gay, in 1950s England. But not just. Pilcrow is a deeply meditative and entertaining novel about a boy gifted with an indefatigable, unbridled imagination. His physical challenges; the realities and abuses of institutionalization; a flawed, loving family; his explorations of his sexuality: all this, but more than all this - a profound celebration of wonder and of play.

Found a lovely photo of her in an outfit such as John described here, but from the 1980s or even 90s; this one is from the 1960s, which is where we're at in the story - but her outfit doesn't match.

Google informs me that, like 'the loo,' 'khazi' is British English slang for the toilet.

Kathrin I knew 'loo', but never heard of khazi. 8y

"Mrs. Dale's Diary," apparently, was a ridiculously popular BBC radio drama from 1948-1969. 'Gyp' is a noun that's slang for pain or trouble. I couldn't easily find an etymological link between it and the various verbs that derive derogatorily from 'gypsy."

BookishFeminist Yea, this was and is a hard one to remove from my vernacular. Lots of people in the states use it as a verb- "someone gyped me." I don't think I've ever actually seen it used as a noun but this is good to know. (Also FYI "gypsy" is considered a slur for the Roma people) (and sorry I keep editing this & probable confusing you- typing while tired ?) 8y
BookishFeminist Probably** I give up lol 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist I found more info here which, if correct, holds that there's no link between the derogatory noun/verb used to refer to the Roma people and the slang (and apparently old-fashioned) noun used here. If that's true, it reminds me of the adverb which I won't write here, which sounds like the horrible n-word but has no etymological connection thereto. 8y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Now that's interesting, jip, gip as I've seen it in my corner of the states, I also took as relating back to a slur of some kind, but since I never saw it spelled with a y I never made the gypsy connection. For some reason I thought it was some Jewish derivative slur, all this time. Either way, I've had an equally hard time removing it from my vocabulary as @BookishFeminist 8y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa It's spelled both ways because depending on the time period and source, "gypsy" can also be spelled "gipsy," which in my understanding is more common in the UK than over here. (Forgive my use of the term to show the spelling.) 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney Interesting—this looks like a great internet resource for etymology too. I'm also not quite sure which adverb slur you're referring to but if it's the word I just ran across researching this- YIKES. I hadn't seen that before. People are awful. Thanks for the info- love learning about the origins of words, particularly if they have cultural significance and can hurt groups of people. 8y
shawnmooney @BookishFeminist I've seen news stories about public officials getting vilified for using the adverb, which I think is not fair, but I also think that, etymological link or no link, it sounds so similar to the epithet that the adverb should be retired. Here's a short URL which doesn't include the word, so those who won't be offended by an adverb that sounds like the n-word can read up on the controversy: http://alturl.com/56ish 8y

SusanInTiburon 😂😂😂 My four-fingered typing horrifies my children ... Henceforth I shall think of yokels with pitchforks when I type. 8y
shawnmooney @SusanInTiburon If you're only using four fingers, I suggest shortening that down to YWPs. Lol. 💕💕💕💕 8y

Megabooks My mom had polio in the 50s and was hospitalized for 4 years. Yesterday, she explained to me why she doesn't cry. Often crying or screaming children in the polio ward were locked in dark closets. She even overhead one nurse say she would unplug an iron lung if a child didn't stop crying in one minute. So inhumane! 😞😞 8y
shawnmooney @Ebooksandcooks That's terrible! There are similar instances of abuse at the institution this poor kid is in in the novel. I thought the quote I excerpted expressed a profound insight into how this kind of thing could've gone on in the earlier generations more than it does now… Not that it doesn't happen now of course...but it seemed to be far less exposed, detected, punished, back then 8y

Growing up in Saskatchewan, Canada in the 70s, I was familiar with the short form of the "my eye" idiom
but not the Betty Martin extension. A saltier version was "my ass!" to express disbelief.

LeahBergen My friend's father from Newfoundland had an even saltier version - "my hole"! ? 8y
BookishFeminist @shawnmooney We use "my ass" down here too! 8y
