The stunning new novel from the No. 1 bestselling author of An Officer and a Spy, Pomeii, Imperium and The Ghost. Rome, 63 BC . In a city on the brink of acquiring a vast empire, seven men are struggling for power. Cicero is consul, Caesar his ruthless young rival, Pompey the republic's greatest general, Crassus its richest man, Cato a political fanatic, Catilina a psychopath, Clodius an ambitious playboy. The stories of these real historical figures - their alliances and betrayals, their cruelties and seductions, their brilliance and their crimes -- are all interleaved to form this epic novel. Its narrator is Tiro, a slave who serves as confidential secretary to the wily, humane, complex Cicero. He knows all his master's secrets -- a dangerous position to be in. From the discovery of a child's mutilated body, through judicial execution and a scandalous trial, to the brutal unleashing of the Roman mob, Lustrum is a study in the timeless enticements and horrors of power.

MWA HAHAHAHAHA … sigh … I suppose I should have chosen something a little more challenging. How is everyone doing with their challenges?

Smrloomis You could always just edit it and increase the number. That‘s what I do but I‘m weird that way! 2y
Bklover I‘m at 10/75. You did great!! 2y
kaysworld1 What I get close to my target I add 5 more on, see what I can get too. 2y

Twainy @Smrloomis I wish you could have a second challenge like a 2nd shelf. My second challenge would be for books over 500 pages or total pages … 2y
Twainy @Bklover you are right on track! You set up a good challenge 😁 2y
Twainy @kaysworld1 I think I did something similar a few years ago. My current goal is 1 a day. I think that‘s more than many people read so not meeting that challenge isn‘t such a bad thing so I chose a challenge that was something I‘d think was a good challenge in general. 😁 2y

🎧 Book 2. This felt like a lot more politic centered.some serious death/murder/capitol punishment. I enjoyed it enough to read on!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Second in his Cicero trilogy, and this one sees Cicero rise to the top of Roman politics by becoming Consul, and shortly after acclaimed Father of the People with the defeat of Catilina's conspiracy. But the top of the pole is a dangerous place, and all too soon the tide of popular opinion turns against Cicero and in a heart-rending final chapter he is forced into exile. Wonderful stuff.

CoffeeCatsBooks Loved this series! I even got the audio too. 5y

Crazeedi This book is a story of what will happen to us if we aren't willing to defend our republic 7y

rabbitprincess Hee hee I enjoy these to-the-point reviews 🙂 Also duly noted; this confirms my decision to borrow them from the library rather than buy them. 7y
