pickI've never read Jennifer Weiner before aside from starting Big Summer and not really getting into it, but this was a lot of fun! Her writing is good and I was sucked into the storyline. Recommend as a light, distracting read 😉
panI had a different book by this author on my “to read” list, but snagged this one at HPB for $2. It was a decent story but in my opinion way too drawn out and the killer was very anticlimactic to me. Once I got into the back half of the book I enjoyed it more, but still just pretty meh.
so-soThis ended up being mostly a letdown. It‘s not a thriller but has the mystery aspect, & I don‘t think it‘s Weiner‘s forte. The reveal got a bit kooky, plus had a villain monologue. Writing overall was mostly fine, dialogue was sharp, but it was too long w/random tangents, & she needs to stop w/MCs who constantly compare themselves to other women & endless talk about bodies, clothes, hair, etc. Not terrible but more negatives than positives. 2/5 ⭐️

Okay, I‘m enjoying this for the most part, but it‘s got the same thing as I mentioned here about another book I read recently: constant, like multiple times on the same page, use of characters‘ full names!! And this author is white as are the majority of the characters, so it‘s not a language or cultural thing. And it‘s driving me freaking batty! Whyyyyyyyyy. I know “Carol” is “Carol Gwinnell” FFS, you just mentioned her four sentences ago! 😣😣😣
As the kids and I walked through the white picket playground gates, we saw four women seated on the green wooden bench by the seesaws: four women wearing the identical shade of dark pink lipstick; four formidably groomed, exquisitely fit, terrifyingly capable-looking women. Each one had a monogrammed paisley silk diaper bag slung across her shoulder, like a Pink Lady jacket. Or an Uzi.
I wanted to read something funny, and Jennifer Weiner is always good for a laugh...hopefully even when she‘s writing about a murder 🔪 #nowreading
pickI really enjoyed this. The ex-flame helping out makes for a slightly more interesting investigation. After taking a peek at some of the other reviews, I had no problem with Kate! I guess I “get” her infatuation with her former crush (though I am not married, so…), and I don‘t have kids, so the fact that she wasn‘t terribly happy with her current situation didn‘t really bother me. In any case, I really enjoyed the story!
