His Excellency Eugène Rougon
His Excellency Eugène Rougon | Emile Zola
4 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
'He loved power for power's sake . . . He was without question the greatest of the Rougons.' His Excellency Eugène Rougon (1876) is the sixth novel in Zola's twenty-volume Rougon-Macquart cycle. A political novel set in the corridors of power and in the upper échelons of French Second Empire society, including the Imperial court, it focuses on the fluctuating fortunes of the authoritarian Eugène Rougon, the 'vice-Emperor'. But it is more than just a chronicle. It plunges the reader into the essential dynamics of the political: the rivalries, the scheming, the jockeying for position, the ups and downs, the play of interests, the lobbying and gossip, the patronage and string-pulling, the bribery and blackmail, and, especially, the manipulation of language for political purposes. The novel's themes-especially its treatment of political discourse-have remarkable contemporary resonance. His Excellency Eugène Rougon is about politics everywhere.

Pickpick

This book was my pick for #Booked2021 “Translated into English “. It is #6 of Zola‘s 20 book Les Rougon-Macquart cycle set in (and critical of) 2nd Empire France under Napoleon III.

The story follows the political career of Eugène Rougon and exposes all the corruption and cronyism of politics. The best character was Clorinde Balbi, likely based on the real life Countess de Castiglione, a woman who is as power-hungry as Rougon himself.

Cinfhen Could have used for #MustacheOnCover too 🥸😉cool collage 🥰 4y
Ruthiella @Cinfhen Thanks! Indeed, I could have also used it for the mustache category! 😂 4y

4âï¸ “To his father he owed his massive, square shoulders and heavy features; from his mother, the fearsome Felicite Rougon, who ruled over Plassans, he had inherited his strength of will, a desire for supremacy that scorned petty concerns and petty pleasures. He was without question the greatest of the Rougons.†😠This is a superb political satire, best to be read slowly 👌ðŸ»

Time for Zola 🤩

Gissy I have Love Story book from this author. I haven't read it yet. Apparently your book and mine are part of a serie but I don't know if they need to be read in order. 5y
sisilia @Gissy Indeed - it‘s the Rougon Macquart series â˜ºï¸ Each novel can be read on its own without knowledge of the other novels in the series. Eugene Rougon is my second book (out of 20!); I‘m following the reading order recommended by the author 5y
Gissy Thank you for the information! Let's see if I read the series in order. It seems is a wise decision but it is a long series 😳 5y
sisilia @Gissy It is a big commitment 😆 5y
Gissy @sisilia Yes! Let's see. Now I will go to do my power walking in Old San Juan just to recharge for my reading time and go out for a little time🤗 5y
