I Cannot Get You Close Enough holds a trio of novellas from Ellen Gilchrist, bringing one of her favorite characters from previous works, Rhoda Manning, to the forefront. Home for the summer in Alabama, Rhoda’s life seems great: her father is rich, she is newly slim, and all of her friends are happy to see her. However, Rhoda has an independent streak, isn’t satisfied with comfortable, and pushes against the constraints such a life hold.

I have my doubts that I'm going to read anything in December that I'll like as much as I did Marmee. And though I loved Marmee, I think I may be looking at the final choice being between I Cannot Get You Close Enough and The Road to Dalton. I'm not sure I'll be able to choose.

Just stunning. I am stunned. I loved it all the way through, but the end of the third novella was wonderful. I will definitely be continuing my quest to find and read all of Ellen Gilchrist's books.

For #WCW- Ellen Gilchrist, who has given me so many splendid tales that I feel as if I know Rhoda and Nora Jane. Her acute observations and flair for dialogue have always enraptured me. I've loved everything I've ever read by her.

CherylDeFranceschi @BookishFeminist I would start with either Drunk with Love or Victory over Japan. The marvelous thing about her stories is they cover the same characters over and over, and move back and forth thru time. So you can kind of start anywhere and move around. 8y
