Central International School’s annual lock-in is legendary. Bonds are made. Contests are fought. Stories are forged that will be passed down from student to student for years to come. This year’s lock-in begins normally enough. Then a group of students led by Marisa Cuevas stage an ecoprotest and chain themselves to the doors, vowing to keep everyone trapped inside until their list of demands is met. Some students rally to their cause…but others are aggrieved to watch their own plans fall apart. Amira has trained all year to compete in the school decathlon on her own terms. Peejay intended to honor his brother by throwing the greatest party CIS has ever seen. Kenji was looking forward to making a splash at his improv showcase. Omar wanted to spend a little time with the boy he’s been crushing on. Celeste, adrift in a new country, was hoping to connect with someone—anyone. And Marisa, once so certain of her goals, must now decide how far she’ll go to attain them. Every year, lock-in night changes lives. This year, it might just change the world.

Even though I am also a young person who cares deeply about climate change and engages in activism for that cause, I couldn‘t handle this book. It felt, just, too dramatic? I may be way off-base with this rating. Curious if y‘all have another opinion?

Mehso-so

#WeDidntAskforThis #NetGalley
While the over all message in the story, how the younger generation is inheriting the problems older generations created and activism is probably more important now than ever to save what we still can, is important, the story just didn‘t quite work for me.
The story seemed to drag a lot and while I wanted to really like it, I came out feeling pretty meh on it as a whole.

Pickpick

People said that was super hostage-y and I really don‘t think it was. I felt that the school‘s culture and the insane preparation by Marisa made it a unique experience. The narrative style alone makes this a great read.

What a fascinating narrative style! This book has no less than 15 narrating characters, but they feed seamlessly into each other and build on the person before them. While it‘s in third person, you hear so intimately each character‘s beliefs and thoughts. It leads to everyone feeling like their side is the correct side and it makes the readers job simple: decide for yourself who is in the right. Very enjoyable so far at 40%!

Today‘s #book mail is compliments of Ink Yard Press. I love the cover and I think the reusable straw, cleaner and bad is a great idea. Since I accidentally threw away the reusable straw that goes with my Starbucks travel cup this will come I. Handy.

My understanding is this book is about climate change through the eyes of the Breakfast club. Can‘t wait to read it.
