They have nothing in commonso why does Ryan feel most like himself whenever hes with Fabian? Pro hockey star Ryan Price may be an enforcer, but off the ice he struggles with anxiety. Recently traded to the Toronto Guardians, hes determined to make a fresh start in the citys dynamic LGBTQ Village. The last thing he expects to stumble upon in his new neighborhood is a blast from his past in the fabulous form of Fabian Salah. Aspiring musician Fabian loathes hockey. But that doesnt stop him from being attracted to a certain burly, ginger-bearded defenseman. He hasnt forgotten the kiss they almost shared back in high school, and its clear the chemistry between them has only intensified. Fabian is more than happy to be Ryans guide to the gay scene in Toronto. Between dance clubs and art exhibitsand the most amazing sexRyans starting to feel something he hasnt experienced in a long time: joy. But playing the role of the heavy on the ice has taken its toll on his body and mind, and a future with Fabian may mean hanging up his skates for good.

Apparently I can‘t go more than a couple days without hopping back into my Rachel Reid Reread. Gotta have that hockey romance.

I loved the hell out of this one the first time through, but the anxiety rep also made me VERY ANXIOUS. I‘m curious to see how I‘ll do with it now.

More #romantsy on this hot day. This third in the Game Changers series features reluctant enforcer Ryan Price who was a very minor character in the second book. I liked the way it addressed some of the darker side of professional sport as well as delivering a satisfying romance. It was nice to get a little glimpse of the MCs from book 2.

Cinfhen Sweet way to pass the day!!! I‘m listening to a rather dry academic book about immigration policy 😕 5y
alisiakae Hmm...what‘s he looking at? 🤔🤣 @Cinfhen back in the day, dry books about immigration policy was one of my favorite things. 😁 5y
Cinfhen You might like this one then @4thhouseontheleft although when the author switches to the personal narrative of Aida Hernandez it‘s spectacular and completely encompassing 5y

Y‘all, Rachel Reid makes me have ALL THE EMOTIONS. In her third Game Changers novel, she turns her focus on a musician whose career is starting to build momentum and a deeply anxious NHL player who‘s questioning his—and the results, they are good.

Maybe a little TOO good. I, like Ryan, am anxious as all hell, and at one point I had to take a break because his life felt SO REAL. ⬇️

xicanti He struggles with stuff like introducing himself, ordering at cafes, and inserting himself into conversations, and Reid nails all the ways those everyday tasks can feel like the world‘s steepest street.

Basically: major TW for accurate anxiety portrayal. Proceed slowly if necessary.

DO proceed, though. Ryan and Fabian‘s relationship is super sweet, and I love their dynamic with their various friends. (Good fictional friendships are IMPORTANT.)⬇️

xicanti There are plenty of character-affirming moments, too, including nuanced looks at each character‘s complicated relationship with hockey. I finished this days ago and I still can‘t stop thinking about it all.

I loved it awfully much—but I‘m also in the weird position of being a little disappointed, because I didn‘t love it quite as much as Reid‘s first two books. ⬇️

xicanti I‘ve read few romances I loved as much as GAME CHANGER or HEATED RIVALRY, though, so don‘t let that put you off. Besides, I think at least part of it was me pulling back because the anxiety felt so real. You may not have that issue.

4.5 stars

writerlibrarian I have the first two on my Kindle. You just moved them up the list 🙂 5y

#bookreport time!

The first Batman stories were technically awkward but still a lot of fun.

Silver Spoon was great as always.

CARDINAL, my last novel of the year, made my Best of 2019. This is why I never announce Best Ofs in early-mid December.

The Wolverine manga was better than I expected.

I loved TOUGH GUY, but not as much as Reid‘s first two books. It‘s out on the 13th and I‘ll have a review for you soon. ⬇️

xicanti I also squeezed in TANK by M Malone (quick and enjoyable), SILENCE by Thich Nhat Hahn (helpful, as always), a volume of HONEY HUNT by Miki Aihara (really good), and the beginning of BATTER UP by Robyn Neeley (cute so far). I started THE SAGAS OF ICELANDERS, too. It‘s frickin huge. 5y
rockpools 🎉🎉🎉 Good luck with Sagas! It IS huge - but surprisingly funny in places. 5y
xicanti @RachelO I‘m enjoying it so far! It‘s been interesting to see familiar narrative structure laid out in centuries-old fiction. 5y

I forgot to share my January Must-Reads! I went with a super thick chunkster, a highly anticipated ARC, the last Patternist book, and a still-unread gift.

I started TOUGH GUY today and it totally snuck up on me. It was just another promising Rachel Reid novel, until suddenly I was so caught up in Ryan‘s anxiety and his new friendship with Fabian and his feelings about hockey that I had to take a break. Because whoa. Reid‘s good at this.
