I'll Take You There
I'll Take You There | Joyce Carol Oates
3 posts | 5 read | 2 to read
"Anellia" is a young student who, though gifted with a penetrating intelligence, is drastically inclined to obsession. Funny, mordant, and compulsive, she falls passionately in love with a brilliant yet elusive black philosophy student. But she is tested most severely by a figure out of her past she'd long believed dead. Astonishingly intimate and unsparing, and pitiless in exposing the follies of the time, I'll Take You There is a dramatic revelation of the risks—and curious rewards—of the obsessive personality as well as a testament to the stubborn strength of a certain type of contemporary female intellectual.

Pickpick

Another winner, love JCO Books! Not the dark, freaky ones, but the down to earth, real life stories right out of real life experiences. At 71 yo, I could have easily been the main character in this book; college student, nieve, wanting to fit in. Her details and settings give me flash backs to myself and the '60s.

This week's #funfridayphoto is favorite books set on a college campus. These are two of my favorites by JCO - one deals with race on campus in the 70s and the other depicts an incredible experience of a young woman with mental illness.

ultrabookgeek I've struggled with Black Girl/White Girl - it made me very uncomfortable and I put it down months ago. I may pick it back up again soon if you think it's worth it! 8y
Neverlistless @sharimichele I read this one several years ago so I can't really say anything specific. But I do remember not being able to put it down and finding it SO interesting! But JCO can be very uncomfortable and difficult to get through. Some of her books have definitely not been for me and others have been perfect for me, so she can be really hard to recommend to people!! 8y
ultrabookgeek @Neverlistless I will go back to it once the weather cools down a bit - I have to start somewhere with JCO! 8y
