Well hmm. A fast, fun read, advertised as #MiddleGrade (?) on BorrowBox, #SpyFi & with #ColorInTitle. Very James Bond-esque, with lots of gadgets and an inventive storyline. Won‘t pass the Bechdel test any time soon, I‘m feeling kind of old (the author obviously didn‘t grow up with UK public info films. Don‘t play on the train lines, kids!), & some bits were just unnecessary (of course the baddies missed apartheid South Africa!) #bbrc #booked2021

rockpools It did make me laugh in places though, and I particularly enjoyed the barge incident at the start. 3y

LibrarianRyan This is a great series. it ages as it goes along. So the first few books are solidly MG, but the newer ones, nope. YA. They did make a movie and an amazon TV show of the first book. 3y

2nd in the series; seems to be the one the TV series is based on. Horowitz is kind of mean to his 14 year old hero; (his) MI6 takes advantage of the fact that Alex is an orphan to put him into dangerous positions. Although it resolves the question ‘why aren‘t his parents worried that he‘s out late and going to strange places‘ that often niggles at me when reading about kids‘ adventures, it‘s sad that he doesn‘t seem to have family or friends.

humouress Horowitz is obviously anti-hunting. (I fully agree with him) 4y
humouress I feel this is James Bond (à la Roger Moore) for kids (but maybe a bit lite on details). 4y

Two books down, nine to go.
.
How this was marketed as middle grade back in the day astounds me. It‘s definitely not for younger readers.
.
Turns out that I remember a lot less about the first few books than I originally thought
