“Somehow lookin' at her made all of the combat make some sort of sense. I felt like I was doin' all this warrin' for her... for kids just like her.“

I would most definitely use this book in my classroom because the ending was so beautiful and moving that I feel like it needs to be shared with everyone to spread awareness about being kind. Although the book was longer, it was worth the read.
Tucky Jo and Little Heart written by Patricia Polacco. Tells the true story of a World War 2 veteran, Johnnie Wallen, and how he saved a little girl from war over in a different country. Years later their lives cross paths again and in a very moving, sincere way. This story is very accurate considering it came directly from Johnnie and it's very authentic as well.
“That‘s the last time I ever saw the little girl”‘
This book would be great in an older elementary school, but should be read in two sessions since it is very long.
This book was very powerful. Tucky Jo was a true hero that saved many people. AT the end of the book, the epilogue shows how many awards he has earned which made him one of the most decorated soldiers in his company.
“She rolled your her sleeve and showed a birthmark in her arm. It was shaped like a perfect heart.”
This story was so good and heart warming. It made me tear up a little bit! It is such a great story and goes to show that a little kindness goes a long way.
Tucky Jo and Little Heart by Patricia Polacco is a a piece of historical fiction. It was published in 2015. This story is about a boy who enlisted to fight in WWII. While deployed he meets a little girl who he calls little heart. They become friends. One day she was taken away and he never saw her. Until he was in the hospital for treatments he couldn‘t afford and thee she was Little Heart. She became a doctor and took care of him.
She reached out and touched one of the swollen bug bites on my arm. Then she bent down and plucked a plump leaf from a ground-huggin' plant. She broke it in half and squeezed the goo that was oozing out of it on the bite. It was instant, blessed relief.
I like how the girl, Little Heart, does not speak English but still shows her kindness to Tucky Jo. I think this is a heartwarming story.
This book is based on a true story including friendship, loyalty, and kindness that stand the test of time in World War II. Tucky Jo enlisted in the army at 15 and was the being the youngest recruit in the Pacific was difficult. But he finds a friends in a girl who soothes his bug bites, introduces him to her family, and gives him some food. When they meet again years later, her act of kindness is returned when she needs it the most.
This is an amazing historical children‘s book. I love thé story line and the illustrations. Everything about this book makes me want to read it over and over to anyone who would listen. I love how it talks about the ugliness of war as well as the other cultures view on the war. This book doesn‘t sugar coat war for the children. Instead it is honest and shows what can come out of war if those fighting have the right intentions.
