A Girl's Guide to the Outback
A Girl's Guide to the Outback | Jessica Kate
7 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
Romance author Jessica Kate explores the hilariously thin line between love and hate in her heartwarming new novel. Samuel Payton is a passionate youth pastor in Virginia, but beneath the surface, Sam's still recovering from a failed business. His coworker--start-up expert Kimberly Foster--is brilliant, fearless, and capable, but her mother's rejection from a young age till now has left her defensive and longing for a family. Two people have never been more at odds--or more attracted to one another. And every day at work, the sparks are flying. When Kimberly's ambitious plans for Sam's ministry butt up against his risk-averse nature, Sam decides that obligations to family trump his work for the church. He quits the ministry and flies home to Australia to help his family save their struggling farm--much to Kimberly's chagrin. As Kimberly's grand plans flounder, she is forced to face the truth: that no one can replace Sam. To what lengths will she go to get him back?

Ministry leader Sam is passionate, charismatic, and a tad risk-averse. Co-worker Kim has great, but expensive plans to expand the ministry. Naturally, she and Sam can‘t help butting heads. He figures it‘s time to leave when he hears that his family could use his help in Australia—but Kim cannot let him go that easily. As they work through the predicaments before them, their (mis)adventures prove entertaining, and I enjoyed every word of the story.

This started a bit slowly for me. I had trouble connecting with the book the first time I picked it up.I didn't realize that it is a Christian book but it wasn't overly preachy or in your face about it, it felt (mostly) natural & worked well with the story. I really enjoyed the book from Australia on & from that point found myself unable to put it down but to be honest I was really more interested in Jules & Mick's story than I was Sam & Kim's.

I‘m glad this book‘s characters had fewer serious issues than the characters in the previous one, Love and Other Mistakes. It felt a little more like a romantic comedy, and I enjoyed that. I LOVED the setting of the story; it takes place on an Australian dairy farm!! Also great fun to see the day-to-day workings of the farm and how much of farming depends on weather and community.

Many thanks to Thomas Nelson for the arc via NetGalley.

I really enjoyed this sweet Christian romance because it wasn‘t just “fluff” but featured 3D characters who were flawed and afraid but grew and learned to trust as the story progressed. I also loved the imagery (from an Australian author) of the workings of a dairy farm in the Outback. This is really TWO love stories, both fleshed out nicely...Kim and Sam and Jules (Sam‘s sister) and Mick. Loved the humor as well. 4/5⭐️ #NetGalley #ThomasNelson

This book was cute. I enjoyed the overall premise & I was glad that they quickly got over their misconceptions about each other, but as someone who isn‘t religious, I didn‘t realise it would have so many references to God. It also seemed to drag somewhat in the first half of the book, but then tie everything up very quickly in the second half.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

In “A Girl‘s Guide to the Outback” by Jessica Kate Writing, our leading lady, Kimberly, has the reader hooked with her wit and sass! She‘s balanced by our leading man, Samual, who is full of practicality and Australian humour. Whilst the story begins in America, it swiftly moves to the Australian outback, the perfect setting for this romantic comedy with a beautiful heart...[read more]
