The Gutenberg Bible
The Gutenberg Bible | Martin Davies
10 posts
Printed in Mainz in 1455 by Johann Gutenberg and associates, The Gutenberg Bible was the first major work printed in Europe from movable type. More than five hundred years after its creation, fewer than fifty copies of the original now survive. Many copies, including The British Library's lavish example, incorporated painted decoration in order to evoke the feel of a more traditional illuminated manuscript. Pages from the library's edition are reproduced in full color in this volume, and Martin Davies's text discusses how The Gutenberg Bible was created and published, as well as the role it played in the early spread of printing in Europe.

#OnThisDay (possibly, exact date is debated) in 1455, Johannes Gutenberg published a Bible, and changed the Western world (Chinese artisans had been pressing ink into paper since the 2nd century A.D). Gutenberg likely made no money from the approximately 180 copies originally printed, and only 49 survive to this day. But the technological advancement it represented is one that we Littens celebrate every day! #HistoryGetsLIT

LeahBergen I find everything about the Gutenberg bibles so fascinating and thoroughly enjoyed this book: 3y

I'm sorry if it seems like I'm deliberately trolling you @LeahBergen but it's not every week I get to work with this beauty twice. This is my favourite illumination, Moses with traditional (mis-translated) horns

LeahBergen Oh, keep them coming!! ❤️😍❤️😍 (even with those weird little mistranslated horns 😆). 6y
charl08 Are there any annotations in the margins? 6y
Moray_Reads @charl08 there are quite a few but very faint, Latin and in secretary hand i.e. basically unreadable, for me anyway. Our copy is digitised here if you want a closet look https://digital.nls.uk/gutenberg-bible/archive/74481666 (I cannot tell you how much it amuses me that its number end in 666!) 6y

LittleBug Wow! That‘s gorgeous! I studied book decoration in the Middle Ages for my Master Degree...miss working with those treasures😢 6y
Moray_Reads @LittleBug I had a pretty incredible day looking in the safe, the Gutenberg, George Washington's own copy of his official letters, a first edition Pride and Prejudice and Origin of Species and a Shakespeare First Folio. Unfortunately, I forgot to take my camera while I was exploring 🙄 6y
LittleBug That sounds like an amazing day!! I‘m jealous!😉 6y

I visited the Gutenberg museum and the working station today. It was so interesting, watching how books were printed in earlier days.
Sadly I wasn't allowed to take pictures in the museum so this one is taken in the working station.
I also saw miniatures books and the Gutenberg bibles today. 😍
And of course several bookshops. 😉 But this only because of the never ending rain. ☔☔

vivastory That would be fun! 7y
Texreader That is so awesome! Where is the museum? 7y
Sarah83 @vivastory Yeah really. I could have spent more hours there. 😉 But there were several guided groups so you didn't have the possibility to take closer looks. we were there about three hours. 7y

The Buddhist goes wild for the Bible. Well, when it's a Gutenberg. And it's the second one I've seen this year! The Morgan has 3 copies but this was the only one on display.

Project Gutenberg is my source for #cheapthrills. I have more public domain eBooks on my Kindle than I'll ever get around to reading. #lyricalApril @Cinfhen
