The Talking Cure
The Talking Cure: Normal people, their hidden struggles and the life-changing power of therapy | Gillian Straker, Jacqui Winship
3 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
'Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.' Carl Jung The essence of successful therapy is the relationship, a dance of growing trust and understanding between the therapist and the patient. It is an intimate, messy, often surprising and sometimes confusing business - but when it works, it's life-changing. Gill Straker and Jacqui Winship, two esteemed Sydney-based psychotherapists, bring us nine inspiring stories of transformation. They introduce us to their clients, fictional amalgams of real-life cases, and reveal how the art of talking and listening helps us understand deep-seated issues that profoundly influence who we are in the world and how we see ourselves in relation to others. We come to understand that the transformative power of the therapeutic relationship can be replicated in our everyday lives by the simple practice of paying attention and being present with those we love. Whether you have experienced therapy (or are tempted to try it), or you are just intrigued by the possibilities of a little-understood but transformative process, this wise and compassionate book will deepen your understanding of what it is to be open to connection - and your appreciation that to be human is to be a little bit mad.

This was very interesting. I am fascinated about why we do the things we do.
Although I would recommend actually reading this instead of listening to it as the narrator's voices are too deadpan.

MrsMalaprop Have lent it to my sister & she‘s reading it now. 5y

Relational psychotherapy 101. Nine chapters, each one a fictional amalgam of clients treated by the authors, with ‘tick-a-box‘ at the end of each chapter to help the reader reflect of whether the ‘issues‘ might apply to them.

Chapters 4 & 5 may or may not have aptly described particular family members, with whom I‘ve been struggling to relate 🤪😂😬. #justsayin‘. Of course, none of the chapters applied to me 🤣😇.

JennyM I‘ve just finished this and thought it was excellent. I saw myself or someone I knew in all the chapters 🤪 5y
MrsMalaprop @JennyM Oh that‘s very cool. I heard about it on Radio National. It was an excellent, accessible way to learn about psychotherapy. I was conscious of how it is unfortunate that it‘s only really for those with means, as the authors comment on at the end. 5y
Rissreads I'm listening to this on audio. It's very interesting but I wish they had chosen someone other than the authors to read it! 5y
