Vincent van Gogh is now known as an acclaimed, incomparable Post-Impressionist painter. But when he lived in Arles, France, in the 1880s, he was mocked for being different. Back then, van Gogh was an eccentric man with wild red hair who used clashing hues to paint unusual-looking people and strange starry skies. Children and adults alike called him names and laughed at him. Nobody bought his art. But he kept painting. Inspired by these events, "The Artist and Me" is the fictional confession of one of van Gogh s bullies a young boy who adopted the popular attitude of adults around him. It s not until the boy faces his victim alone that he realizes there is more than one way to see the world. Artwork in the book uses vibrant color and texture to bring the laneways, cafes, and wheat fields of southern France to life while playing on scenes from van Gogh s own work. The lyrical text carries the emotional weight of the subject and will leave readers with the understanding that everyone s point of view is valuable."

This fictional #picturebook focuses on the first person narration of a young child who says and does mean things to Van Gogh. I‘m not 100% sure of the audience age on this one - some bigger words and the narration just seems more for an older audience. I do love the illustrations in this one - so Van Gogh-esque. #BBRC #LetterA

I guess it teaches a lesson about not being a dick to other people, but this is just someone trying to get sales on the back of somebody else. It'd be different if the author knew van Gogh, but he didn't 🤷‍♀️

Kiddo paid NO attention to this lol a bit of a bummer. Van Gogh's my fave. 💕

Pickpick

Everyone in Arles, including the children, made fun of crazy Vincent Van Gogh and his awful pictures. Years later, an old man looks back with regret on his unkind behaviour in his youth. The art in this children's #picturebook about bullying evokes Van Gogh's work without actually copying his style. Very nice! 🇨🇦

The anti-bullying message is very well done in this picture book. Also, I love the art by Sophie Casson.

Lots of books about encounters with famous people exist out there but I like the additional peer pressure/bullying message here. The art works well too.
