Found with a slip of paper titled ‘for publishing 1994’, they are published here for the first time. Resplendent with Mahfouz’s delicate and poignant observations of everyday happenings, these lively stories take the reader deep into the beating heart of Cairo.

This was a very short posthumous short story collection by Mahfouz . It explores the community within the quarter. Male female relationships and family are among the most important. Sadly some of the stories translate as mere glimpses of a short story. They were not all perceived with the same power. This being said I gave no regrets about reading it. Loved the foreword by Élif Shafak and theNobel Prize for literature acceptance speech by Mahfouz
