'One of the most entertaining and profound philosophical novels ever written' Washington Post On a cold night in Holland two men meet and change each other's lives forever. Max Delius - a hedonistic, yet brilliant astronomer who loves fast cars, nice clothes and beautiful women - picks up Onno Quist, a cerebral chaotic philologist who cannot bear the ordinariness of everyday life. Despite their differences, they fast become great friends. And when they learn they were conceived on the same day, it is clear that their meeting is no coincidence. As the pair fall into and out of love with the same woman - Ada - so their lives become further intertwined. For all three are on a mysterious journey destined to shape human history. The Discovery of Heaven is internationally recognized as a masterpiece. Rich in philosophical, psychological, historical and theological enquiry, it is an extravagant, bold and satisfying novel of ideas. 'Sparkling, irresistible . . . you'll learn a lot from this novel' The Times 'Anyone who reads The Discovery of Heaven will come away enlightened, challenged and entertained' Wall Street Journal 'Written carefully and ingeniously by a novelist who is also a poet' John Updike, New Yorker

The Discovery of Heaven | Harry Mulisch

Intriguing, It's an amazing new look on things. I love the presence of higher beings without any specific religion or moral code.

BarbaraBB I loved this one! 4y

#WhereInTheUniverse

One of my favourite Dutch books is this one. It is a chunkster that tells about all important things that happened in the 20th century, combined with the friendship between two men and a woman and a bit of religion. Almost too much, but for me it worked fine.

PSreads73 Possibly my favorite is Ready Player One. Author is from OH but I‘m from WV. I‘ll have to look into some WV authors. 7y
Liz_M Your favorite? Well Eline Vere was very good so I guess I should read this sooner than later! 7y
BarbaraBB @Liz_M You must, it‘s on the list 😀. But I forgot about Eline Vere when I posted this and I have to admit that Eline is even better! 7y

ofbooksandme @PSreads73 Ready Player One has been on my TBR for sooo long! 7y
ofbooksandme @BarbaraBB I have a map where I paint if I've read one book from that country and just thinking about it I don't think I've read a Dutch book. I'll be there in a few months on vacation so that might be a good way to get in the mood! 7y
PSreads73 @ofbooksandme I might read it again before I watch the movie. Movie releases March 29th. If it‘s even half as good as the book it will be worth watching. 7y
