Aged Mother Jilo is wise in the ways of magic but once upon a time, she was just a girl.1950s Georgia: King Cotton has fallen. Savannah is known as the beautiful woman with a dirty face, its stately elegance faded by neglect, its soul withering from racial injustice and political corruption.Young Jilo fiercely independent, intelligent, and ambitious, but thwarted by Savannah s maddeningly genteel version of bigotry finds herself forced to embrace a dark power that has pursued her family for generations, an ancient magic that may prove her salvation or her undoing.Explore the fascinating history of one of the Witching Savannah series most vivid and beloved characters, as the resourceful and determined Jilo comes of age, strives to master formidable magical skills in the face of overwhelming adversity, and forges her strange destiny against the turbulent backdrop of the civil rights struggle in the American South."

Bailedbailed

I've read the first three in this series, and I started listening to this one, and I kept thinking "I have to finish this so I can listen to the next thing I'm actually interested in." That was my sign. I think maybe the author, despite a commendable desire to include a civil rights story line, ended up with something that couldn't decide what it wanted to be. And there are LOTS of good novels with a civil rights story line.

DebinHawaii I read and really liked the first three books too but I have had this one on my Kindle from NetGalley for months now and just can't seem to get into it. I haven't officially made it a bail yet-but I probably should. 😬 8y

Mehso-so

This fourth book in the Witching Savannah series gives us the back story on Wills and Taylor families, as well as the ongoing struggle of darkness and light. Here Jilo is strong, resilient, and less contradictory than in the first three books. But for me the book dragged a bit. 🌟🌟🌟

Boy, here I was hoping for a fun read and this hits me in the first chapter. I know how May feels since my mom passed not quite ten days ago. Serendipity in a book.

Donnasmiles Sorry for your loss....books and music always helps us process. I'm an only child and lost both parents in a seven week period...no one can imagine the loss and it's so different for each of us. 8y
BookishFeminist ❤️❤️ sorry about your mom & hope you can find peace and comfort through books. 8y
Sue ❤️ My father passed at the beginning of May. It feels like a long journey. 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Donnasmiles Thanks. I'm an only child too. I can't imagine losing both parents in such a short timespan! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BookishFeminist Thanks. Right now I'm having trouble concentrating. But they'll be my escape again soon! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Sue I'm sorry for your loss as well. It is a long journey but time helps. 8y
BookishFeminist @BarbaraTheBibliophage I know how that goes-- hopefully you can get back into the swing of things soon. And until concentration's better, there's always audiobooks & music. :) 8y
Donnasmiles @BarbaraTheBibliophage hold tight to your memories, take your time to heal. I remember feeling like I was an orphan even though I had my hubby and kids. Pop up memories along with regrets haunted me. It took a while. I had the best parents (blessed) 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BookishFeminist I can still read but in short bursts not long sessions. Audio books aren't much better ... but it will get better in a week or two probably. :-) 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Donnasmiles My dad died 11 years ago, and I was much closer to him than Mom. She and I had a complicated relationship, but still plenty of good memories. I don't have regrets, though. Grateful! 8y

My next read. It's a fourth book from the Witching Savannah series. Needed something light and easy before I head into The Twelve!

NatalieR Ooh, I love the cover! 👀 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage It's a great fantasy series. This is kind of a prequel about one character. 8y
Texasblues I need to get back to this series - I really liked the first one. 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Texasblues Yes you do. They other two were definitely worth it. I'm not far enough along in #4 to review yet. 8y
Texasblues I've got to start writing out a TBR of stuff I have on my Kindle - I forget about them! I know that I have at least the second one already. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Texasblues I made a collection called Next Up, but I ignore it when I find a new book that excites me. :-) 8y
Texasblues I need to make collections - I haven't done anything to organize my kindle. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Texasblues I couldn't live without them. It's the difference between a pile of books (not even stacked) on the floor and book shelves. At least for me! 8y
Texasblues I will have to play with it over the summer while I'm off. 8y
