Light in the Darkness
Light in the Darkness: A Story about How Slaves Learned in Secret | Lesa Cline-Ransome
2 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Rosa and her mama go to school together—in the dark of night, silently, afraid that any noise they hear is a patroller on the lookout for escaped slaves. Their school is literally a hole in the ground, where they and other slaves of all ages gather to form letters out of sticks, scratch letters in the dirt, and pronounce their sounds in whispers. Young Rosa is eager to learn the letters and then the words, because after the words comes reading. But she must have patience, her mama reminds her, and keep her letters to herself when she's working on the plantation. If the Master catches them, it'll mean a whipping—one lash for each letter. No matter how slow and dangerous the process might be, Rosa is determined to learn, and pass on her learning to others.

An important book about America‘s history and how Black folx learned to read. Remember, there is always a reason why books are banned and education is underfunded!

Light in the Darkness by Lesa Cline-Ransome, Illustrated by James E. Ransome (HF) - This is a touching story about a young slave named Rosa. During the night, Rosa and her mother sneak out to go to school in hopes that they don‘t get caught by their master or groundskeeper! All the slaves learn from gathering sticks and scratching letters in the dirt. She hopes to learn all the words she can so one day, she‘ll be able to read!

alexialovesmith I would use this as a RA and stress the importance how lucky we are to be able to go to school and learn the way we do! https://books.disney.com/content/uploads/2013/09/Light_in_Darkness_DG_Æ&lsquo... This resource has excellent pre-reading activities that meet ELS13, the vocabulary in specific would meet UDL2.1. This book is another great book to read during social studies. #ucflae3414su19 5y
