The Real North Korea
The Real North Korea: Life and Politics in the Failed Stalinist Utopia | Andrei Lankov
1 post | 4 read | 4 to read
After providing an accessible history of the nation, the author turns his focus to what North Korea is, what its leadership thinks and how its people cope with living in such an oppressive and poor place, arguing that North Korea is not irrational, but rather a nation that has survived against all odds.

Lankov has an interesting perspective - he was a Soviet exchange student to North Korea. I really enjoyed the first several chapters where he compares the North Korea of Kim Il-sung to the USSR under Stalin. He compared them in areas from black markets to gulags, and NK usually came out as more repressive.

The last few chapters where he made predictions about NK weren‘t as current since the book was published in 2013. #audiobook
