Death of Artemio Cruz
Death of Artemio Cruz | Carlos Fuentes
4 posts | 11 read | 13 to read
As the novel opens, Artemio Cruz, the all-powerful newspaper magnate and land baron, lies confined to his bed and, in dreamlike flashes, recalls the pivotal episodes of his life. Carlos Fuentes manipulates the ensuing kaleidoscope of images with dazzling inventiveness, layering memory upon memory, from Cruz's heroic campaigns during the Mexican Revolution, through his relentless climb from poverty to wealth, to his uneasy death. Perhaps Fuentes's masterpiece, "The Death of Artemio Cruz "is a haunting voyage into the soul of modern Mexico.

When I was young, my dad and I used to read this book together to try and help me learn Spanish (he's bilingual). It was a side-by-side English/Spanish edition, and I vividly remember him trying to gloss over a reference to a character's penis, even though it wasn't a sexual context. He really didn't want to explain what it meant and kept saying "member." My Spanish is still only passable.

vivastory Love Fuentes. Saw him at a reading in 2004. 7y
literarymermaid I have the same issue with Spanish. It gets better in Spanish communities but I never learned grammar and even vocabulary fades when not around Spanish speakers. 7y
readordierachel @StoredFeminism Yeah, its super hard when you don't have someone to practice with regularly. 7y

For my #booksetinSAmerica this is great tale of corruption and politics in Mexican culture. Had to read it for a class and turned out to really dig it!

Tcip Dude I am so dumb. Mexico is not in South America. Fuck that was stupid. 8y
