NATIONAL BESTSELLER AN NPR BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR It is December 6, 1941. America stands at the brink of World War II. Last hopes for peace are shattered when Japanese squadrons bomb Pearl Harbor. Los Angeles has been a haven for loyal Japanese-Americansbut now, war fever and race hate grip the city and the Japanese internment begins. The hellish murder of a Japanese family summons three men and one woman. William H. Parker is a captain on the Los Angeles Police Department. Hes superbly gifted, corrosively ambitious, liquored-up, and consumed by dubious ideology. He is bitterly at odds with Sergeant Dudley SmithIrish migr, ex-IRA killer, fledgling war profiteer. Hideo Ashida is a police chemist and the only Japanese on the L.A. cop payroll. Kay Lake is a twenty-one-year-old dilettante looking for adventure. The investigation throws them together and rips them apart. The crime becomes a political storm center that brilliantly illuminates these four driven soulscomrades, rivals, lovers, historys pawns. Perfidia is a novel of astonishments. It is World War II as you have never seen it, and Los Angeles as James Ellroy has never written it before. Here, he gives us the party at the edge of the abyss and the precipice of Americas ascendance. Perfidia is that moment, spellbindingly captured. It beckons us to solve a great crime that, in its turn, explicates the crime of war itself. It is a great American novel. From the Hardcover edition.

Pickpick

This is a big thick brick and at times, between the shoot outs, blood gore and subterfuge, there are yawn moments. However, you have to know what you‘re getting into. If you‘re looking for tough talk and fist to cuffs with an intriguing and intricate conspiracy, Ellroy is hard to beat.

SamAnne I started this and set is aside, but have intended to come back to it.

Creadnorthey @SanAnne It‘s a bit of a project- I found I had to stick with it or else lose the many plot threads and emotional momentum. (edited) 13mo

I have a sad thing to report, dear Littens. There are just too many good books out there. I tried, really I did. But I just couldn't get into it, so I returned it. #DNF #Igaveitmyall 😣😔😢

Still haven't given up on the book tagged. It took a while to get into it, but it's getting good. 👍

Ummm... so my Bookcase Club box came today. I‘m not stoked about either book. Clearly the “Strange Worlds” box isn‘t for me. Plus I always forget that they are hardcovers... so free to a good home! I‘ll ship them to you... I just know that I won‘t read them.

Daughter: "Can we go to the bookstore. I want to get book 2 of The Dork Diaries."
Me: I suppose. (Like she doesn't know I'm doing cartwheels in my head.)
So...4 books a planner and a calculator (why??) later... I think we did pretty well. ?

Mehso-so

...not quite done, it's really somewhere between a like and so-so. The writing is great, but I'm finding the plot a little disjointed!! Maybe a reveal in the next 200 pages will change my review...
