The Inheritors
The Inheritors | William Golding
8 posts | 10 read | 8 to read
Eight Neanderthals encounter another race of beings like themselves, yet strangely different. This new race, Homo sapiens, fascinating in their skills and sophistication, terrifying in their cruelty, sense of guilt, and incipient corruption, spell doom for the more gentle folk whose world they will inherit. Golding, author of Lord of the Flies, won the 1983 Nobel Prize for Literature.

What an audacious book. A fictional account of the displacement of Neanderthals by Homo Sapiens, told from the Neanderthals' point of view. Creating a narrative voice that captures a simpler, less abstract mode of thought without sounding cartoonish and that also allows the reader to empathize with the characters is no small feat, let alone when you realize that Golding 👇

The_Penniless_Author ...somehow wrote the first draft in only 29 days! Not always the easiest book to follow, certain parts benefit from careful and/or multiple readings, but it's worth it. Definitely not like any other book I've ever read. 3mo

Lok was running as fast as he could.

rwmg I loved this one, trying to work out how we would see the events reported from the Neanderthals' point of view 3mo
The_Penniless_Author @rwmg It's a pretty audacious thing to attempt, and I'm amazed so far at how well he pulled it off. 3mo

Lok and the people are moving to their summer camp. As they settle in they become aware of new people in the neighbourhood.

An imaginative telling of what happens when Neanderthals meet modern humans from the Neanderthals' point of view. The author really brings you into a completely different way of experiencing the world.

This ebook was a re-read but the cover has change since the last time I read it. I preferred the oldy cover (shown).

My choice for #LetterI in the #alphabetgrame tells story from a Neanderthal's POV about the arrival of modern humans. I much preferred it to the author's better known “Lord of the Flies“ because it really does feel like the narrator has a different consciousness.

Golding explores human nature, the meaning of progress and the existence of evil through the prism of the Neanderthals' slow species-death at the hands of the Cro-Magnons. Requires concentration but strangely moving.

Ruthiella I‘ve long been curious about this book! I have a soft spot for Neanderthals. 4y

As i put this book down i then read an article from the guardian by the authors dtr in which she reflects on this being her father's favourite book and drawing inspiration from his family and his war experiences. Thus a neanderthal group, a gentle family cross paths with homo sapiens, a new species quick to use violence. The story is bleak but well told, challenging but definitely worth reading and i will do so again as the writing is brilliant.🔽
