Forty-two stories (I use "stories" loosely; they include journal entries, essay notes, fictional "letters", and everything in between), most only a few pages long, form a tapestry illustrating the psyche of an accomplished workaholic who was contemptuous of success, a depressive who wrote whimsical, observational sketches mixing sweetness and biting sarcasm, often in a single sentence. Walser was apparently one of Kafka's biggest influences.
