“But one day, your voice will wiggle it's way out“

This can teach children to fully embrace the beauty of all of the lives around them. This would be good to have in a classroom where students have a habit of being negative. We can work on bringing positivity!

Willow Whispers by Lana Button (2010) is a fictional picture book that has some real big emotions connected to it. It centers around the idea of Willow, who has a quiet voice and is not often heard/overlooked because of this. The theme shows us to use our voice proudly and to look for helpful tools if we need help. Don't be afraid to speak up, your voice has value!

I would use this book to help advocate for those in class who feel shy or may need help using their voice! It would be a great topic about expressing yourself/standing up for one another. Showing compassion!

“When Willow finally came out, she was holding a magic microphone!“ I like this quote because the illustration shows her 'magic microphone' to be a toilet paper roll.

I think that this book is really fun to read especially when talking about voices and what level it should be at. I really appreciated the art in this book because it describes the plot very well. This book would be good for a class that might want to invent something.

Pickpick

Willow's Whispers by Lana Button. 2010. Picture Book. This book uses space as a big part of the book which I think shows the quietness of Willow. The illustrations are small and faint which I think also describes the book well. The words on the page show that her words are quiet and when she gets her microphone her words are super big which shows that she is loud.

This book is a great tool for showing students the importance of expressing oneself, and the importance of making sure that others voices feel heard. This is another good book for a morning meeting on how you can be a good friend, or how you can make your voice heard.

Pickpick

Willow is a young girl whose soft voice makes her wishes go unnoticed by those around her. This book uses its text as an extension of its illustrations, having Willow‘s whispers in small print compared to her peers voices. The pictures work to further isolate Willow, always placing her away from her peers at the end of the page. As Willow learns to express herself, she moves closer to her friends in the illustrations and her shirt turns to pink.

I would use this book in my classroom to show my students the importance of using their voices to speak up for what they want and need.

Review:
This book uses size to portray how loud or quiet Willow is speaking. It also uses shape to portray the child-like innocence and essence of children. Lastly, there is space being used to show the feelings of Willow. The more space there is on the page, the more lonely she feels.
