A Safe Girl to Love
A Safe Girl to Love | Casey Plett
7 posts | 9 read | 12 to read
Eleven unique short stories that stretch from a rural Canadian Mennonite town to a hipster gay bar in Brooklyn, featuring young trans women stumbling through loss, sex, harassment, and love. These stories, shiny with whiskey and prairie sunsets, rattling subways and neglected cats, show growing up as a trans girl can be charming, funny, frustrating, or sad, but never will it be predictable.

"Before I began to mortgage my liver and lungs, before I had friends afraid of cops and sidewalks, before I had dead friends, I just wanted to know what it was like to walk around with another girl and do that. I want to know what it's like to not be deathly worried about your friends...I was doing bad for a while, but I'm all right now, or at least stable...It's not like nobody believes I'm a girl...It's just that it all weighs on me."

Pickpick

I loved this book. The characters are written with such love, even the ones who aren‘t very likable. Each story creates its own full world for the characters to inhabit, though there is some delightful overlap. A pleasure to read. Definitely recommend!

What a great day! It's FINALLY sunny in Vancouver and I got the best #BookMail today! It's an ARC of Topside Press's anthology of sci fi and fantasy by trans writers. So excited!! (Tagged another book by one of the editors Casey Plett since this one doesn't exist in the Litsy database).

Bibliogeekery Ooo, so exciting!!! 8y

I really am glad we talk now. It's just hard to forget it took a trip to the emergency room.

Mehso-so

While you and I seek love, there are people who try to be satisfied with just a few nights spent in the company of someone they trust. With no beautiful words whispered into the night and no promises of eternal love.

All these short stories keep trying to tell you just one thing - trans people are just people. They are afraid, they are hopefull, they are trying to make peacefull living and be happy the way they can.
