An Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments
An Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments | Ali Almossawi
7 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
Have you read (or stumbled into) one too many irrational online debates? Ali Almossawi certainly had, so he wrote An Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments! This handy guide is here to bring the internet age a much needed dose of old-school logic (really old-school, a la Aristotle). Here are cogent explanations of the straw man fallacy, the slippery slope argument, the ad hominem attack, and other common attempts at reasoning that fall short plus a beautifully drawn menagerie of animals who (adorably) commit every logical faux pas. Rabbit thinks a strange light in the sky must be a UFO because no one can prove otherwise (the appeal to ignorance). And Lion doesnt believe that gas emissions harm the planet because, if that were true, he wouldnt like the result (the argument from consequences). Once you learn to recognise these abuses of reason, they start to crop up everywhere from parliamentary debate to YouTube comments which makes this geek-chic book a must for anyone in the habit of holding opinions. Its the antidote to fuzzy thinking, with furry animals!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This little #nonfiction book really does a good job of laying out poor arguments and flimsy reasoning.
It's a quick but informative read that will broaden your understanding of solid conversation skills.

This was a great read, also very appropriate with the US elections going on. The author and illustrator did an excellent job of getting somewhat complex themes across in a very simple and memorable way. Great job.

Stumbled across in a stack of @Ironmaus books. You can judge this one by its cover. It's an adorable, straight forward explanation of bad arguments. For memory purposes, I really appreciate the organizational taxonomy and that each one is accompanied by an illustration of use.
