Mudhouse Sabbath
Mudhouse Sabbath: An Invitation to a Life of Spiritual Discipline - Study Edition | Lauren F. Winner
6 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
Winners original Mudhouse Sabbath has sold 45,000 copies, been translated into three languages, and spawned a successful video study series. After her conversion from Orthodox Judaism to Christianity, Winner found that her life was indelibly marked by the rich traditions and spiritual practices of Judaism. She here presents eleven Jewish practices that can transform the way Christians view the world and God, including attentive eating, mourning, candle-lighting, and Sabbath-keeping. Since first publishing the book, Lauren has earned her MDiv and PhD, and become an Episcopal priest. Her thought has deepened and developed. This new Study Edition incorporates the complete original text plus primary texts from Jewish and Christian sources, and new material on each of the eleven topics. The result is a powerful work for Christians wanting to explore in depth and understand the Jewish origins of Christianity. At a time when we are so aware of the differences between Judaism and Christianity, Lauren Winners book on what we can learn from each other is so refreshingly welcome.Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People

4/5 ⭐️

Author was raised Jewish, became a Christian when she was an adult. She found she missed some aspects of her Jewish faith, particularly the mindfulness of various parts of life. Good reminder, especially during these times, of the importance of being mindful about our lives and the choices we make, and, if it applies, your faith.

“If you call my friend Molly and no one is home, you will be greeted by an answering machine that asks, in the voice of Molly‘s sixyear-old son, that you ‘please tell us your story.‘”

I‘m still working, and much of it is checking in on people. To remind myself of the need to care for myself, I picked up this book I‘ve meant to read for a few years, to remind myself to live intentionally, more mindful of my faith.

ShyBookOwl That's great. It sounds like your work is very important, but so is self care 😊 5y

I loved reading this book on the differences between how Jews and Christians deal with aspects of observance. It was a beautiful look at the rituals of Judaism from a Jew who has converted to Christianity. It drew me closer to Judaism.

Interesting meditation on differences between Christian and Jewish practice and theology as well as the author spiritual journey. I am not at all religious ( bad catholic)but I enjoyed very much learning about Jewish practice and worldview.

An eclectic blend of tea and coffee for #drinksoncovers. #anditsaugust

brandymuses I thought I didn't have a book for this. Completely forgot about The View From Saturday! 7y
BarbaraJean @brandymuses The drink on the cover is subtle, but it's there! 7y
brandymuses I also forgot about When Dimple Met Rishi and that drink is not subtle and it's important to the plot. 7y
BarbaraJean @brandymuses 😂I've seen that cover so many times on Litsy... and didn't think of it either. And the drink is practically the whole cover! 7y

This is a book about those things I miss. It is about Sabbaths and weddings and burials and prayers, rituals Jews and Christians both observe, but also rituals we observe quite differently. It is about paths to the God of Israel that both Jews and Christians travel.
