Not your typical western and I loved it! It takes a bit to get into the rhythm of the differing voices, but it‘s imaginative, immersive, and all about the characters you get to know from first person perspective. I can feel the heat & dust & thirst.
Be forewarned there is no tidy end, just how I like it. 😢 I‘ll be looking for a paper copy.
The narration is wonderful!
My first Western in years! In 1893, Nora is holding down the ranch with her son waiting for her husband to return from searching for water. Lurie is an immigrant. And he is part of the team caring for the herd of camels imported for US calvary for use in the desert. Separate stories that slowly begins to careen into a point where they crash together. The ending is devastating; felt punched in the heart. Shades of El Cid. And, oh. those camels!
I told him you had seen corners of these deserts few eyes had ever beheld, for no creature had ever needed water less nor yearned for wandering more.I told him about that time a flood caught us up in a painted canyon and the waters arose around us while you walked, kicking slowly, until, you floated up, up past the petroglyphs...

Just used my five credits on Libro.fm to get these beauties.
By the way, I am loving this app as compared to Audible....if anyone is interested, here‘s my referral link: http://libro.fm/referral?rf_code=lfm52791
Not too many here have made it to my TBR.... the tagged book has though! I enjoyed her first novel, so looking forward to her second. It‘s been a while.
