This cover is W. L. Bost, who was 92 when he was interviewed in Asheville. He‘s one of 21 people interviewed as part of the WPA Slave Narratives project whose stories are in this slim volume. The editor, Belinda Hurmence, explains in the introduction that the interviewers were all given the same questions to ask, and you learn to intuit these after reading two or three accounts. Given the time period (the depression) 👇🏻

Lcsmcat 👆🏻 of the interviews, a feeling of “the old days were better” permeates a surprising number of them. And most (not all) insisted that _their_ master was good - it was the others that committed atrocities - which made me think that they weren‘t comfortable being entirely forthcoming with these white writers. Even so they are stories that should be told. I wish there were photos of all these people, who told stories of their lives the same way👇🏻 4y

Texreader How wonderful that these interviews were done even if they could‘ve been done better. I love capturing older generations‘ stories and nothing more important than the stories about atrocities, lest we forget. 4y

I think this is going to be a tough read, but one I need to read now. Right now. Y‘all, my daughter and son-in-law are marching with #BLM in NYC today. I‘m proud of them, but terrified.
