Captain Marvel: Higher, Further, Faster
Captain Marvel: Higher, Further, Faster | Liza Palmer

Carol Danvers kicks off her U.S. Air Force career with her first year at flight school, where she'll be tested in ways she never thought possible-and make a lifelong friend, Maria Rambeau, in the process-in this atmospheric and exciting prelude to the upcoming Marvel Studios' film, Captain Marvel! Focusing on Carol Danvers and Maria Rambeau as they wend their way through a space that was still very much a "boys' club" in the 80s, the important social-cultural themes explored in this novel are sure to draw in not only fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but readers of social issue-focused YA who gravitate toward relatable protagonists learning to navigate the world around them, and to succeed in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity.

Mehso-so

Eighteen-year-old Carol Danvers very much enjoys her first year at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado. She meets and becomes besties with Maria Rambeau. The End. (And also sexism.)

This YA novel is pretty flat. The characters are not fleshed out well; the story would have been more compelling if we knew more about Carol's family, past experiences, etc. How was high school for her? This felt like a first draft.

Bailedbailed

My daughter and I are huge fans of Captain Marvel so we were both excited to read more about Carol's time in the USAFA and her friendship with Maria Rambeau. Unfortunately this story was moving pretty slow and we bailed around 100 pages in.
