Funny, sad, and personal – this came at exactly the right time.

This was an exceptionally observant and engaging book. Set mostly in Berlin in 1932, the story follows a young couple as they struggle to keep their heads above water during a time of increasing unemployment and economic uncertainty. Despite the financial tension, this is a warm-hearted tale with a thread of humor, although reading it today, it's impossible not to feel the weight of the terrible things to come.
A couple trying to survive in pre-Nazi Germany, facing a poverty and fear that many of us are not aware existed for the common man. Rich characters.
