House of Reckoning
House of Reckoning: A Novel | John Saul
After the untimely death of her mother and the arrest of her father for killing a man in barroom brawl, fourteen-year-old Sarah Crane is forced to grow up fast. Left in the cold care of a foster family and alienated at school, Sarah befriends classmate Nick Dunnigan, a former mental patient still plagued by voices and visions, and the eccentric art instructor Bettina Phillips, a mentor eager to nurture Sarah’s talent for painting. But within the walls of Bettina’s ancestral mansion, Sarah finds that monstrous images from the house’s dark history seem to flow unbidden from her paintbrush—images echoed by Nick’s chilling hallucinations. It seems the violence and fury of long-dead generations have finally found a gateway from the grave into the world of the living. And Sarah and Nick have found a power they never had: to take control, and take revenge.

Pickpick

Another great John Saul book (and narrated by one of my favorites, Angela Dawe)! I found the way the supernatural elements came into the story very interesting. Some plot elements were pretty hard to stomach, because I have a hard time dealing with injustice and how cruel the other kids were. There was a very satisfying conclusion that helped mitigate that, though.

TW: bullying, emotional abuse, bad foster parents, alcoholism, spoiler in comments

annkuch13 There is a description of a dog being killed/eviscerated. It wasn't super graphic but I could see how it might be upsetting. 5y

Mehso-so

My first book from John Saul and honestly I didn't know what to expect. I'm glad it turned to be quite an enjoyable read. It's a decent, "mild" horror read although I feel that the writing is geared towards junior high readers ?

Rating: 3?
