The Cave
The Cave | José Saramago
Cipriano Algor, an elderly potter, lives with his daughter Marta and her husband Marçal in a small village on the outskirts of The Center, an imposing complex of shops, apartments, and offices to which Cipriano delivers his pots and jugs every month. On one such trip, he is told not to make any more deliveries. Unwilling to give up his craft, Cipriano tries his hand at making ceramic dolls. Astonishingly, The Center places an order for hundreds, and Cipriano and Marta set to work-until the order is cancelled and the three have to move from the village into The Center. When mysterious sounds of digging emerge from beneath their apartment, Cipriano and Marçal investigate, and what they find transforms the family's life. Filled with the depth, humor, and the extraordinary philosophical richness that marks each of Saramago's novels, The Cave is one of the essential books of our time.

The Cave | José Saramago

“Authoritarian, paralyzing, circular, occasionally elliptical stock phrases, also jocularly referred to as nuggets of wisdom, are a malignant plague, one of the very worst ever to ravage the earth.“

My #underratedbook pick for #augustofpages #photochallenge. This is one of Saramago's more underrated books but it's one of my faves. A story about a potter and his family that isn't very fast paced but keeps you interested until the end. #diversebooks #translatedbooks

OSChamberlain Sounds like my kind of book. I'm a sucker for non fast paced books. Think I'm an old man at heart. 8y
BookishFeminist 😱 I need to read this. It sounds amazing. I love Saramago. 8y
Yamich49 @OSChamberlain Haha well I'm definitely an old woman for sure so I 💯 approve of your old man reading wants. It's a very interesting story and Saramago's a great writer so you really can't go wrong. 8y
Yamich49 @BookishFeminist Yes! He's fantastic. It's begins as a simple story about a man and his family then expands to examine the bigger ideas and questions in life. So very Saramago but a little more readable than some of his others. 8y
