pickExpected one thing, got another, and found deep emotional connection. The main narrative explores anxiety, and how that is both internalized and manifested: and also how if you are not careful exploited. As someone who is just recently addressing their anxiety, seeing some of my own literal thoughts on the page was deeply cathartic. I expected science-fiction fantasy and got supplementary therapy.
so-so⭐️⭐️ How about this incredible cover?! Unfortunately, my love stops there. This story started strong, but didn‘t deliver. The idea of an LDS teen taking prepping to apocalyptic proportions was clever, and leaning into her mental health made sense. But as the story progressed, instead of Ellis developing positively, she was portrayed as gullible and unhinged. I didn‘t want that for her.
pickThe writing was great. I found the characters odd enough to fit where the author was going but relatable enough. I did find out the twist early on but it didn't take away from the book at all. Enjoyable, funny read highly recommend.
so-soPros: The anxiety rep in this is excellent and the way in which people (even your own family) can react to that anxiety was very close (sometimes word-for-word) to what I've personally experienced.
Con: I've about had it up to here with MCs (namely young girls, admittedly) who are so stupidly naive and trusting. Just stop.

pickI've never actually read a book where the mc is Mormon so this was interesting. I have a friend who is a former member of the Mormon faith so id love to hear from her about how accurate the rep is. I did help me recognize that not all Mormons are strict. I liked the bi and gay character rep and just all the characters as a whole. My only struggle was that it lacked a clearly identifiable endjng solution until near the end. Love Katie's writing!
