I had high hopes for this book, and I can appreciate what the author was trying to do, but I just don‘t think it worked well. It was a stretch to relate this to the horrible boarding schools for indigenous people and I think it would have been better to separate the two concepts - a little boy who doesn‘t conform, and a kid trying to keep their identity in a situation that is trying to take it away.
