Sex is a Funny Word
Sex is a Funny Word: A Book about Bodies, Feelings, and YOU | Cory Silverberg
8 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
A comic book for kids that includes children and families of all makeups, orientations, and gender identies, Sex Is a Funny Word is an essential resource about bodies, gender, and sexuality for children ages 8 to 10 as well as their parents and caregivers. Much more than the "facts of life" or the birds and the bees," Sex Is a Funny Word opens up conversations between young people and their caregivers in a way that allows adults to convey their values and beliefs while providing information about boundaries, safety, and joy. The eagerly anticipated follow up to Lambda-nominated What Makes a Baby, from sex educator Cory Silverberg and artist Fiona Smyth, Sex Is a Funny Word reimagines "sex talk" for the twenty-first century.

This was the primary book I read with Maya when she was in elementary school to help with sex ed. When I saw it on the Banned Books list, I decided to reread it. It is hands down my absolute favorite book for kids on the subject, and it's a shame it makes the Top 10 #bannedbooks list. It teaches that some words that go along with “sex“ are respect, trust, joy, and justice. It teaches anatomically correct terms and that these body parts ⬇ ⬇

alisiakae are not bad or shameful. It talks about gender identity, and alternative ways to show respect and love if you are not comfortable hugging someone or shaking hands. It is age appropriate and superbly done. #booked2020 #bannedbooks #bookspinbingo @cinfhen @barbarathebibliophage @thearomaofbooks 4y
Velvetfur That sounds like a great book! My friend's kids are too young to be reading or understanding anything right now (!) but I'm going to recommend this to them anyway. Thanks for your review! 👍🏻 4y
alisiakae @Velvetfur I think I started using it when maya was in 3rd it 4th grade. It doesn‘t actually explain intercourse or how babies are created, but sets a great foundation for that subject (edited) 4y

Velvetfur @4thhouseontheleft ah ok, we don't have the grade system in the schools here but my friend's little boy is 4 and has just started school, my other friend's boy is 3 and she has a new baby too 😁 The friend with the 4-year-old will love this, I'm sure 👍🏻 4y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 4y
Cinfhen Great review!!! 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds like I should recommend this to our son for our 10 y.o. granddaughter. She thinks she's *sooo* worldly, but I'm sure this would be a good idea. 4y
alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage I think this is definitely a great pic for a 10 year old 4y

My goals for #SuperSeptember:

📚 Average 90 minutes of reading a day
📚 Read a banned book (I‘be actually read Sex is A Funny Word a few years ago with Maya, reading this time with an eye on why it is on 2019‘s banned books list
📚 Finish at least 2 of the 3 books on the bottom row
📚 Go on at least 2 audiowalks

Andrew65 Great goals, good luck 😊👍 4y
wanderinglynn Probably on the banned list just because it dares talk about sex! 🤭 Its right there on the cover—the horror! 😱 And if you talk about it, then kids are likely to do it! (edited) 4y
alisiakae @wanderinglynn I think I saw somewhere it was because it contains families and people with various gender identities. And yeah, the whole subject of the book...the horror! 🙄 (edited) 4y
wanderinglynn So not only does it talk about sex, it talks about non-hetero families?!? I am shocked! Why Miss Alisia, I may just faint dead away right here from all this naughty talk. 🤣🤣🤣 4y

I read this book to my nieces. It's so wonderful. It's an accessible, entertaining, queer-positive, trans-positive book about sex. It highlights consent, being body affirming and how everyone is different and that's just great. I really recommend this one! #queerbooks #transbooks 🏳️‍🌈

This book is about respecting your body and trusting someone. It teaches children about the meaning of sex and it‘s significance. It teaches you about your body, feelings, and yourself.

This is so perfectly and beautifully inclusive, wow. It answers all the common questions kids have about sex and gender and their bodies, and so much more. Even the most complex topics are covered in a way that makes it seem so simple, encouraging kids to think for themselves, and get to know themselves, in a healthy, developmentally-appropriate way.

#ReadingResolutions Day 8: First #Purple book I saw in my phone‘s gallery of images. Found this at the Canadian International School Library here in Singapore. Always wonderful if your school has progressive librarians who provide access to materials that children can navigate and discuss meaningfully with responsible, caring adults.
