2nd book set in Afghanistan I've read in as many weeks and sadly both were Pans. Thanks to some atmospheric descriptive writing I got more of a sense of the place from this one, though in places it was overblown & for me suffered from Emperor's New Clothes Syndrome. But, I'm sorry, the premise was just so totally, ridiculously, mind-bogglingly unbelievable that I just couldn't get on board with it. I found it laughable. Cont. in comments ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Could not stand the shallow and vapid MC who showed herself to be not much more than a silly, naive, petulant brat with Daddy Issues who wasn't so much radicalised as indulging in a bout of "I'll show them, so there!" And then she gets the hots for some Afghan guy and I'm groaning! ??‍♀️ 4y
readingjedi Seriously, does anyone buy an 18 American girl passing herself off as male for months on end in Afghanistan? The issues and themes presented are all big and worthy and SERIOUS. But this premise was just so downright silly it only served to undermine them. 4y

The publisher's blurb describes this book as "a coming of age story like no other". I can think of no better way to review this in a single sentence. The narrative drops the reader immediately into the protagonist‘s point of view and many parts of the story unravel subtly as the story progresses. A smart, well-constructed and well-written novel, I would recommend this highly for book clubs. It's one you are going to want to discuss. #netgalley
