But when John Fletcher, now Deputy Sheriff of Shrewsbury, asks Gareth to help him investigate a pool of blood for which he has no body, Gareth cant refuse. And when the investigation points to a conspiracy involving some of the leading citizens of Shrewsbury, Gwynedds foremost investigators go looking for answers--and find that trouble isnt far behind. The Renegade Merchant is the seventh Gareth & Gwen Medieval Mystery.

I picked up on more little details of this one while listening than I did reading it 4 years ago now. I also enjoyed it much more than I did last time. Maybe because I was prepared from the beginning that Rhin was only going to be a character in the present tense for less than half the series. I quite enjoyed this book this time around, if I‘m being honest.

Charging ahead, because I know from experience this book will make me feel better from the last book. After taking some time to regroup and process after the heartbreak of the last book, it is time to charge ahead, just like Pince Hywel, the new edling.

I‘m out of my Woodbury slump and finished this Book 7. Kudos to Ms Woodbury for tackling the social ills of medieval Wales and its neighbors in another complex story. The main characters are so well written that I‘ve become quite attached to them (or hate them when necessary), but even new characters are richly detailed, like the Shrewsbury deputy sheriff in this one and even a very minor Irish character and King Madog. 4 stars.

Texreader I did it @GingerAntics ! On to 8! 6y
GingerAntics That “minor” Irish character isn‘t so minor, actually. I think an alliance of sorts is forged in book 8. 6y

Since I finished The Dante Club (loved it!) I am back to this Book 7 of 11 in the series. I know why I‘m struggling with this series now (spoiler below), but I shall be strong and jump back in.

Texreader I don‘t like main characters I‘ve grown emotionally attached to dying!! I‘m ticked off with the author who knew from history she had to write it this way, so why did she have to make Rhun such an endearing character? @GingerAntics 6y
GingerAntics Yeah, I had a hard time with this book for that reason too. It was just so hard getting through this book. I didn‘t like it as much as any of the others. Charge through, because the next one is better. This one, ultimately, in the end, helps you heal a bit from that. 6y
Texreader @GingerAntics Thanks. That helps give me motivation to keep going. 6y

GingerAntics I didn‘t know how to write my review for this one. I gave it 5🌟 because the story is good and I felt a lot better at the end of the book than I did at the beginning, but there were so many mixed emotions with this book. 6y
Texreader @GingerAntics That‘s why I have Dante Club such a high rating-a fabulous ending. It was so slow I wanted to bail but once it got going I read for hours into the night to finish it. 6y
GingerAntics I tried to get it from my library, but they don‘t have it. Hopefully they will get it soon. They have another Dante inspired book by the same author. 6y
GingerAntics Wait, it‘s the sequel to the Dante Club. That officially makes zero sense. 6y
Texreader @GingerAntics There‘s a sequel?? I sure hope the author has learned to speed up his narrative. 6y
Texreader @GingerAntics Ok so Dante Club is from 2003 and he‘s written many books since. In my mind 2003 is still yesterday. 6y
GingerAntics lol it doesn‘t seem that long ago, really. The sequel is The Dante Chamber. I‘m not sure it‘s officially a sequel, but it‘s in Boston again and I think it may even have the some of the same characters. 6y
Texreader @GingerAntics My daughter was 1 year old in 2003. She‘s now a sophomore in high school. I‘m trying to deny all those years have passed and that I turned 50 this year. 😜 6y
GingerAntics I was graduating high school in 2003. I don‘t want to think of where all those years have gone either. 6y

5🌟 Cadwaladr has been a naughty, naughty boy since he‘s been in exile and on the run for his life (and not in the fun way we all enjoy so much, either). I think, in a way, I healed a little from the heartbreak of the last book along with the characters. Another spectacular Gareth and Gwen story. I am in love with this series, and the historical note at the end of this book also gave me some historical books to look up.

GingerAntics Started and finished this one in a day, too. These books are so good I can‘t help myself. I should be ready for the new book (book 11) when it drops 18 September. #therenegademerchant #sarahwoodbury #garethandgwen @Samplergal #twointhree (edited) 6y

I read this and just kept on going, then several chapters later I really sunk in for me and I stopped to go back and find it. This is so true, and one of those things you don‘t really fully understand or appreciate until you‘ve lost someone you love.

Geeze, how do these guys really feel about him? I just can‘t quite tell.
What would a murder investigation be if the whole town didn‘t want one of the victims dead?!

GingerAntics @Texreader how far are you in this book now? I don‘t want to say anything if you haven‘t gotten there yet. 6y
Texreader @GingerAntics Chapter 4. I‘ve been working on Dante Club most of today... 6y

After the tragic ending of the last one, I‘m really looking forward to this one. I‘m kind of hoping Hywel can get a cuddle from Mari, and Christina doesn‘t turn out to be a traitor, too.

Deep breath.

HERE WE GO!!!

GingerAntics @Texreader she‘s pregnant again?! Sheesh, Gareth hardly sees her, and when he does he can‘t keep his hands off the woman. I read once that morning sickness is worse with girls, so I fear she‘s having another girl if she‘s sicker than she was. 6y

And on to Book 7. As hard as it is to bear (based on the ending of the last book, Book 6), I appreciate the author‘s staying true to Welsh history.

GingerAntics I was just having that same thought. I liked the bit at the end where she said she knew she‘d have to write this book when she wrote the first sentence of the first book. I knew I should have read about Welsh history to prepare me for some of the big things. I have a few books on my wish list now. 6y
