Locascios story of a young American abroad is unflinching in its portrayal of sex, desire, racism, and the excitement and confusion of youth. Infused with erotics and politics, this is a novel that will haunt you.Viet Thanh Nguyen, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Sympathizer Roxana Olsen has always dreamed of going to Paris, and after high school graduation finally plans to travel there on a study abroad programa welcome reprieve from the bruising fallout of her parents' divorce. But a logistical mix-up brings Roxana to Copenhagen instead, where shes picked up at the airport by Sren, a twenty-eight year old guide who is meant to be her steward. Instantly drawn to one another, Roxana and Srens relationship turns romantic, and when he asks Roxana to accompany him to a small town in the north of Denmark for the rest of the summer, she doesnt hesitate to accept. There, Roxanas world narrows and opens as she experiences fantasy, ritual, and the pleasures of her body, a thrilling realm of erotic and domestic bliss. But as their relationship deepens, Srens temperament darkens, and Roxana finds herself increasingly drawn to a mysterious local outsider whom she learns is a refugee from the Balkan War. An erotic coming-of-age like no other, from a magnetic new voice in fiction, Open Me is a daringly original and darkly compelling portrait of a young woman discovering her power, her sex, and her voice; and an incisive examination of xenophobia, migration, and what it means to belong.

This is a compelling story about a young American woman‘s coming of age and sexual awakening while abroad in Denmark. Locascio did a really good job portraying in visceral prose the complicated emotions that accompany the early phases of sexual discovery for women. I liked that it delved into deeper political topics, though some of Zlatan‘s parts did feel forced. Roxana‘s internal conflicts are where the novel shines the most.

Mehso-so

This book presents a straightforward look at sexual desire and frustration. The story is about a young woman just out of high school who goes to Denmark for the summer before college. There she has an intense relationship with a lonely, depressed older man. This is a so-so for me because the narrative was muddied a bit by the inclusion of issues around refugees and nationalism. It seemed a little shoe-horned into the story. 3⭐️ Ebook is on #Hoopla

batsy I felt the same about the refugee angle. 6y

I'm still mulling over my thoughts, but I was intrigued by this boldly-written story of 18-year-old Roxana, an American in Denmark on a study programme. She becomes sexually entangled with an inscrutable Dane with a cruel streak & forges a connection with a Bosnian asylum-holder. The novel depicts Roxana's sexual awakening in intimate detail & fuses it with the political. It's the latter aspect that felt forced. Despite that, a captivating read.

Kalalalatja Okay, I have to read this! If only to see if the depiction of Denmark is realistic or not 😄😄 6y
Cathythoughts Interesting review... I can see why there would be “ mulling over “ of thoughts. It does sound intriguing 👍🏻 6y
batsy @Kalalalatja Haha! It would be interesting to know what you make of it, but I have to warn you that a lot of it takes place inside an apartment, with more of an exploration of her body than the city 😆 6y
