"We obtain little by brutality, while we obtain much, if not all, by the sweetness."
-Hector Malot, Sans Famille
Sans Famille (Nobody's Boy) is one of my favorite childhood french reads! I was so obsessed with the anime especially the girl version, Nobody's Girl. It follows the story of Remi, an orphan, his struggles and adventures.

A favorite book of my grandparents. As a boy, I read their hardcover with these illustrations, an edition probably published during WWI or earlier. Because I'm an adoptee, the story of this poor orphan boy got all the way inside me; I wonder if that's why Grandma pushed the novel on me so?
